(37,648 posts)He worked for Jimmy Carter as his presidential speech writer. He was Chief of Staff to Tip O'Neill.
He has definite Democratic Party cred. And he's a terrific townhall host. He asked some great questions when the audience didn't, like would Pete have ousted Franken. A great question, and Pete gave a great answer.
He gave Mayor Pete golden opportunities to shine. Matthews knows what he's doing.

(6,916 posts)I cruised through the title of post quickly and confused it with Chris Wallace (and the Gillibrand town hall).
Mea culpa.
What I said, apply it to Wallace

(11,143 posts)He reminds me of the way rump would be if he knew anything about government and history or anything at all: Loud, rude and striving above all else to be the center of attention. I like Pete but Matthews ruined it for me.

(11,631 posts)Everyone knows it by now. He can be annoying but he's consistent and whoever chose him for that role already knew what they were getting.

(37,648 posts)when they were on certain issues, when the audience didn't ask those. They were great questions, and gave Pete an opportunity to show his stuff. That's the job of the townhall host.
Matthews clearly likes Pete.

(28,254 posts)The difference now is his increasing inability to run the show properly. He needs to retire and go count all his money; MSNBC needs to give that time slot to somebody with better hands-on talent---which means somebody besides Chuck Todd.
