Clinton Did Not Intend to Close Door on 2020 Bid

Clinton Did Not Intend to Close Door on 2020 Bid

"SNIP....

Although Hillary Clinton told News 12 Westchesterthat she is not running for president in 2020, the New York Times now reports that Clinton actually “wasn’t trying to be emphatic and close the door on running” and “was surprised by how definitively it played.”

Clinton is “bothered” that people expect her to definitively rule out another bid and that she’s “waiting at least to see the Mueller report” before she formally does so.

.....SNIP"

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

14. What's open to interpretation is the timeframe it represents.

It was interpreted by many as meaning she won't be running in the 2016 President election at any time but the clarification today puts it in the "not running right now but maybe in the future" category.

37. maybe she meant...

she's not running as of this interview....but tomorrow is another day.

I don't quite get her being so coy about this. Maybe she just wants to mess with the reporter. But this kind of behavior doesn't help her overall image of not being plain spoken and every sentence she utters must be parsed.

There's no sign of her exploring another run...so visits to Iowa or getting staff on board. Leave it at that.

18. I do too.

The ONLY reason I don’t want her to run is because I’m sick and tired of seeing her beaten up. Especially by pissants who aren’t even worthy to approach her wardrobe, much less touch the hem of her pantsuit.

I feel rather protective of her. I don’t want her abused, lied about, misquoted or misrepresented, or otherwise fucked with.

But I do hope we keep hearing from her, and continue benefitting from her wisdom, vast and formidable experience, and her brilliance.

I would prefer that she not run, but if she decides to and win the nomination, I am behind her 1000%.

I could see why she may want to run if the Mueller reports shows collusion against her by Trump and people associated with him and by the Russians.

People are being killed by our government in our name. What more noble reasons for a true revolution? Sarandon, like most comfortable people are all talk about societal change, the conditions badly affecting poor people and immigrants at our southern border don't affect them. So they go around spouting off and setting back true change for the better.

Let her run if she really wants to. It's a grueling schedule, but if she feels up to it and believes she can still represent the party best, let the people decide.

I think HRC is from the mold of the DLC which worked well during the 90s. I believe the party has moved on from there....but if she wants to run again....have at it hoss.

That has me reconsidering my support. Inslee is the only progressive in the race that has a proven track record of accomplishing goals on clean energy use expansion, pay equity, $15+ minimum wage, gun registration, protection of the oceans, broad based economic growth, criminal justice reform. The rest are just talking about those things, he has implemented policies that are working.

More Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than any other losing presidential candidate in US history.

The Democrat outpaced President-elect Donald Trump by almost 2.9 million votes, with 65,844,954 (48.2%) to his 62,979,879 (46.1%), according to revised and certified final election results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

12. Well, they were certainly willing to vote for her by a decisive margin before Comey intervened.

And that was even after he intervened the first time.

I suspect that if Bernie Sanders or Martin O'Malley had been the Democratic nominee then they would have suddenly found themselves under FBI investigation and facing chants of "lock him up."

In any event, this is all pointless. She has said many times that she is not running. And, no, she does not have to nail anything shut, or make any special effort in that regards. The campaign will eventually begin and the candidates running will be the ones on the stage. That will end it, and nothing else. The media will not stop looking for reasons to say that she is contemplating a race so they can attack her for supposedly contemplating a race.

Don’t know who this “we” is you are talking about.

We couldn’t do better than having the most qualified person ever to run be our candidate. She has already proven she can get more votes. She warned the country about everything that is happening today because she has her finger directly on the pulse of America, it’s citizens, allies and enemies. She is immensely respected around the world.

But yeah, you go with telling the woman what she should do. I’ll hold your beer.

All three now have democratic governors (one whose popularity increased after Trump was elected and who won a second term). That could be good or bad for us, if the democratic governors policies prevent their asses from getting burned more and actually make things better, they may think Trump isn't so bad, which would really suck. But if one looks at 2018 election results, look like they have learned their lesson, Dems did well in all three states.

But why do WI, MI, and PA get all the mentions when it comes to 2016 Republican wins and 2020 strategy?

There are several more red or purple states that Democrats won in 2008 or 2012: Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, and Iowa. 3 of 4 of these states are quite winnable (Indiana is the biggest challenge) and would be big pickups in 2020, not to mention any swiches in Ohio, Georgia, Texas, and Arizona.

I don't think it serves us to hyperfocus on WI. That being said, we have a big job to do to make sure the Democratic nominee wins here next fall. We're ready to put the work in and make it happen!

13. Here's a story about Maggie defending Trump this morning:

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/03/that-is-absurd-cnn-host-explodes-at-reporter-maggie-haberman-for-normalizing-trumps-hush-money-payoffs/

An interview with New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman went careening off the rails when host Alisyn Camerota flipped out over Haberman suggested that there was nothing unusual about President Donald Trump paying off his porn star mistress while conducting the nation’s business.

“This is not the first time you have had a president of the United States who was wealthy, right? There were others who were wealthy who had to take care of private citizen business,” Haberman said. “This is a different realm of private citizen business. It is going to continue to dog him, I think, for the next couple of months.”

“That is absurd, Maggie,” interjected Camerota.

“Which part?”

How many times did Warren have to say in 2016: I'm not running, I'm not running, I'm not running. The bitter irony? Now she is running and she's being torched.

Now it's HRC: I'm not running, I can't imagine running again, I'm not running.

Because what? There's nothing of import about the miserable tenure of Donald Trump to write about? Or are the endless questions directed first at Warren and now Clinton implying that women can't make up their own minds? Unless they're endlessly pestered by journos who seemingly have nothing better to do.

Ugh!

Same reason I wanted Al Gore to run again and was heavily involved in the Draft Gore movement (2000 was the first election I ever voted in).

With the field as wide as it is, she has a good a shot as any.

Bothered that this woman is constantly subjected to being told how to act. By almost everyone. All the time.

Enough already.

Run again, Ms. Hillary. I’ll vote for you.
You’d make a great President!

But "real progressives" do the same thing, frequently with the same talking points.

If she were to run, I'd vote for her ... if she does not, there are many fine alternatives.

45. The article says that Hillary hasn't closed the door on running.

I don't know whether it is true or not, but if she is leaving the door open or if the convention turns out to be brokered, then she might be the compromise candidate.

We have other candidates listed as options who have not declared their intentions. I believe that it is perfectly reasonable to include Hillary so that members can indicate their preference.

55. Hillary is...

… not running. if something wild happens, Hillary could enter the race and win. Let's say North Korea nukes South Korea... another Great Recession occurs... even the bigots will say the reality show is over and the country will shift to the most experienced person. Hillary would feel obligated to enter the primaries... Otherwise, it will be a new direction-type candidate. Just my opinion.

73. However, if Joe Biden is already in the race --- it is hard to argue that she is more experienced

than he is. He was a Senator from 1973 until 2009 - chairing at different times both the Judiciary committee and the Foreign Relations Committee. Hillary was a relatively junior Senator leaving to be SoS after 8 years. She was Secretary of State for 4 years -- he was VP for 8 years - and probably among the people most involved with all the decisions Obama made.

It is hard to know how to consider her having been First Lady, but the length and breath of Biden's campaign makes it impossible to just say she is more experienced.

78. I agree...

… my scenario also favors Joe Biden. On paper, he would absolutely be considered more experienced. Still, I count Hillary Clinton as an atypical "First Lady" and consider Bill Clinton's two terms as part of her experience. They both have plusses and I think Hillary would probably have an edge in winning the top office... but I would be happy with either one of them.

61. It is one of the great regrets in my life that HRC is not our president...

That Night was a shock to me (as to us all) not just because Donald J Trump was going to be president (a horrible, horrible, unthinkable thing) but also knowing that HRC was not going to be.

I think she'd have made an extremely fine president. One of the greats. Probably the smartest president we'd have had since who? Madison?

And not just smart but strategic and capable. A real progressive.

We missed out as a nation. Big loss. Momentous loss.

That said, it would be strategically unwise to run her against Trump in a re-match in my estimation.

We need a nominee who would naturally clean up in WI, MI, PA, and AZ. And NC. And FL.

I'm not happy to say it. I think HRC understands it the same way.

There isn't space for her.

No one is clamoring for her to run or thinks she has a realistic shot at the nomination.

She has done a fantastic job in her career in public service. The other side cheated to win last time and it is criminal but there is no place for her in 2020.

It’s bad enough BS is showing how much he doesn’t give a shit about our success in 2020 by bringing in his baggage and inflamatory discord.

I adored her in 2016, disgusted every single day the way 2016 ended up for her, but think we ALL would be so much better off if both her and BS kept their baggage out of 2020 giving us our best chance at reclaiming the Senate and Presidency.

81. The truly pathetic thing about people like Sarandon is

they can blockage all over everywhere about “burning it all down”, starting some revolution, overthrowing the power structure, and other such drivel, they don’t have to live with, or IN, the results of all that.

The “burn it all down/blow it all up” crowd has no not a clue in the world how all that chaos and destruction is going to look. And taste. And smell. And feel. They can’t even guess in their wildest dreams what it would be like if we DID “burn down/blow up” yyfcall our governmental infrastructure. The underpinnings of the most basic services that our institutions provide, the many es sential services that government provides - locally AND nationally - that so many of our fellow Americans want, need, and depend upon.

Once you HAVE burned it all down/blown it all up, you still have to get good, you still want to flick the light switch on and have your room lit up after dark. You still expect to drive up to the gas station and get a fill-up. You still think your life should continue as normal like it always has. And with that kind of chaos you’re talking about - that we all kinda expect - you’re going to be trying to achieve some form of normalcy amid smoldering ruins, piles of ash and wreckage, and nobody around to help you because everybody around you is just as screwed as you are. Think Venezuela right now. Think Puerto Rico after the hurricane. Think total societal breakdown.

Susan Sarandon May be able to drive away to mansion like, but you probably won’t have that option or that kind of safety net when it all goes to Hell around you. Which is precisely what you’ll have after you’ve “burned it all down and/or blown it all up”. And Susan Sarandon won’t come galloping over to your rescue. Her type will be long gone.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
