Biden Remains By Far the Strongest Candidate Against Trump

When we think about politics all of us are prone to meld together things we support with things that are viable, possible, popular. With this in mind I want to flag to your attention one part of the WaPo/ABC news poll that came out over the weekend. One headline out of this poll is that Trumps approval rating is the highest ever recorded for this particular poll. We shouldnt draw too much from that data point since its only slightly higher than the average for this poll and to date other polls show no significant strengthening.
But I want to draw your attention to this finding.
I want to separate here what you may think of Joe Biden and his candidacy and fairly extensive data we have on his relative strength vs Trump. There are a lot of people out there insisting that Biden will be a general election trainwreck for the Democrats. Hes too old-fashioned, has too much baggage, is too indisciplined a campaigner, is too out of touch with the causes and issues that animate a younger and more diverse generation of voters. Each claim has a litany of evidence behind it. I mean, just a couple days ago he was saying hed be open to renominating the 66 year old Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.
Many argue that nominating Biden would encourage third party runs of the Jill Stein or Ralph Nader variety which, as Ive argued, is almost a prerequisite for Trumps reelection. I worry about this a great deal. But look at the other/neither/dont know number. These are pretty small differences. But at least this poll provides little evidence for this.......................

(6,043 posts)Trump's ties to Putin alarmed the Republican old guard a long time ago and it seems to me they have been busy working on a plan to save the Republican Party, contain Trump, and then ease him out or neutralize him.
Jeffrey Epstein trial may be their ticket or the New York investigation into Trump's business dealings-
I expect a to see a much different political landscape before actual primary season.

(6,043 posts)There will also be more information coming out on Russia.
They see no benefit to themselves in countering Trump publicly but they have a candidate ready when they decide the time is right. I doubt the candidte will be Pence.

(43,148 posts)Joe is my #1 or #2. He will go head to head with Trump, to put their boot on Trump's throat and keep it there. We need to attack. If we don't Trump starts Crooked, Crooked and name calling. Don't give it room to stick. We need to dominate the news cycle the way Obama did on the campaign trail. Trump cannot compete with Joe Biden's stature, Trump is low on credibility.
I am all in for whoever wins our primaries.

(1,291 posts)Joe knows he's from another generation and somewhat out of step with the Democratic base. He probably appears less effective trying to triangulate his position against other Democrats in the primaries than he would be when his opposition is the embodiment of the abhorrent.
