Related: About this forumThis is for anyone who likes VP Biden.. from May 1st
in Iowa City at VP Bidens first or second day on the campaign.. and you can see the back of my head cheering in there.. this is why we love Joe Biden, and his supporters still have that hopeful attitude that things can be better.. we do not have to go down the road to destruction of our Democracy... we can send Trump back to NY.. where he really belongs.

(25,183 posts)It is absolutely true that Barack Obama won his elections with the votes of a lot of white people in what is known as flyover country, and that would include the non-urban/suburban folks in blue states.
Why did they vote for him? I theorize that one reason was to try to get absolution for the legacy of slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, etc. It was probably part of the reasoning that having a black President would "help us get past this race thing."
When they saw that absolution didn't come, they went for Barack Obama's worst enemy, the man who was the leader of the birtherism movement. Trump in effect said, "They're never gonna forgive you," and that got him nominated and elected in the Electoral College.
If you can find that scenario plausible, you can see why I fear talk about reparations. When you see African-Americans turning on the likes of Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, can you understand why flyover whites are no longer trying to bend over backwards to court favor with African-American issues?

(14,572 posts)corporate propaganda from Fox 'news' and AM talk radio.
But as to the upcoming election - to my mind, there is only one main issue - Trump's racism.
Following this, healthcare, social security, climate change - all the things my candidate has plans for.
But the first thing ALWAYS needs to be that America is better than Trump's hate and racism.

(22,875 posts)was just that great.. and while I started out with Gov O'Malley, and he did not make it .. I had to pick another candidate and it was HRC.. the absolute hate of the Clintons in Iowa was palpable.. she won Iowa in the caucus but only by the narrowest of margins.. and we are NOT flyover country.. seriously that is what loses people

(25,183 posts)that Hillary Clinton was demonized like no other politician in modern history. That was one of many factors. But I expect the right-wing press to do the same job on whoever we nominate, they'd just have to throw it into high gear.
I still think that a population that voted for Bush twice then Obama twice had racial issues that they wanted the election to resolve for them.
