he got more talk time than the other low-polling candidates. And if a Democratic voter is looking for a "centrist" candidate, he did outshine the four you mentioned.

He may be the one who did the best out of his debate. If he can get his support doubled as a result of this debate, it would still not be much, but it would give him a shove away from the bottom tier.

Tue Jul 30, 2019, 11:07 PM
Jul 2019

They do have an obligation to insure their survival, and that is what I don't think they are fucking getting right now.

They can hoard their money and let the rest of society go down the shitter, but two things will happen, first the rest of society WON'T go down the shitdrain and second, chaos will take over. In a state of total chaos, the rich, corporations and their assets will be first on the menu.

Like I said, the rich and corporations only have an obligation for their own survival. They are seriously blowing it right now. Historically, the rich have been able to run off to stable countries when their countries fell into chaos. With the entire world melting down under the weight of income and wealth inequality, there will be no stable countries for them to run to and not enough bullets and weapons for them to all avoid being killed, killed after a lot of bad stuff will be done to some of them.

127. Warren's foreign policy is interesting
Tue Jul 30, 2019, 10:58 PM
Jul 2019

Her thoughts on foreign policy were interesting to me on two points.
1. No first nuclear strike. Her point is valid. We need to calm things down. And if this gets misinterpreted as weakness by other states or actors, we have our nuclear arsenal to show that we are not weak. And the way we conduct foreign policy will also show that. Someone has to lead on this issue as everyone starts freaking out over climate change. She is thinking this through, imo, despite what we were all taught in university or college classes on international relations/politics.
2. Trade agreements. She's right. She wants concessions that benefit workers and reverse the race to the bottom aspect of commerce and capital. It is a grim world otherwise, despite all the benefits of international trade. I don't believe she wants to undermine trade. But folks, we are in a climate crisis and we want to conduct policies as if we have all the time in the world?

She is the clear winner for me tonight. She is thinking with this moment. I'm with her, though still open to Harris.

Effortlessly connected the dots, and he threw in those perfectly crafted swipes at the Republicans at exactly the right moment. His closing statement was the highlight of the entire debate for me.

Is Ryan a Democrat? Wow. At least he gave them practice in Republican talking points. Sanders should learn to make a point without shouting. However, it was a great debate. Buttigieg, Warren and Marianne impressed me. I wish Klobuchar got more time in.

Brown shoes and belt are ok with a blazer and dark trousers (or khaki pants) in a less formal setting.

Dark brown cap-toe oxfords or monkstraps with a great dark navy suit look wonderful on a man.

The one exception, however, I can instantly think of is where my parents work, The City (London). In banking and insurance, etc. most firms are really rigid and elitist still, not just on suiting and overall attire, but school background, etc., but even that is changing a bit at some of the firms. Also The City is really poor example for most of the rest of the world, lolol, as it is truly a little planet unto itself, and deffo not all for the good.

153. GQ might approve, but not formal enough

The safe shoe choice in such a formal, scrutinized environment would be black Allan Edmonds laced shoes. It is not just the financial districts where brown shoes would be viewed poorly. BTW Allan Edmonds are made in the US and are often the choice for the inauguration.

154. the debate is a not a semi (lounge suit or tuxedo) or full (morning dress or white tie) formal event
Wed Jul 31, 2019, 10:32 AM
Jul 2019

It is informal, aka business dress.

I did not use nor reference GQ.

Here is a Savile Row (his shop is now in Knightsbridge) bespoke British tailor's (Edward Sexton, who co-founded Nutter's at 35a Savile Row) outlook on brown shoes:

https://www.edwardsexton.co.uk/sexton-appeal/romancing/

Black can often look rather harsh when put against a tailored trouser; warm brown tones in various shades look softer and suitably elegant. Clean, half-brogue, Oxford monkstrap and wholecut shoes suit the clean lines of Sexton garment.

If you do not like the way the candidates dress, then send them your suggestions.

In terms of all politicians Trudeau is probably going to be first on your list, lol.

155. Actually not Trudeau
Wed Jul 31, 2019, 11:06 AM

I strongly preferred the choices of Obama. Trudeau tends towards suits that are too tight (I know it is the current fad), both in the jacket and the pants. I do not find that look flattering on him, Trevor Noah, Colbert, or really anyone else. The jacket bunches up, even when standing. The pants pull. Too tight is not a good look for a man or a woman.

I think we shall just have to differ in our tastes. I grew up and live in one of the centers of preppy, Chapel Hill, NC. I have owned companies in the US and UK doing lots if business in the world financial centers, so I have tended towards the traditional in clothes and shoes (Allan Edmonds, Church's formal, and dear old Bass loafers).

One of my main hobbies this summer in Stockholm in terms of men's clothing (I am a married lesbian so not a lot of practice, ihihih) has been trying to re-do my brother-in-law's wardrobe. He is 34, eleven years older than me, and dresses as if he were my younger (say 15yo) brother-in-law.

I am only having limited success.

Have any of the candidates pushed back on the format? Any one take it to Jake Tapper? Did he really ask "Are you going to raise taxes on everyone? Yes or No."

I would have said. "No Jake, I'm only going to raise them on you. I'm going to tax you so much you're going to have to look for a job."

137. CNN vs MSNBC as moderators
Tue Jul 30, 2019, 11:20 PM
Jul 2019

I think CNN did a much better job of organizing the questions, of disciplining the candidates with their time, of spreading the amount of time for each, and for in general being more intelligent and concise in their brief but to the point questioning (no gotcha questions, or grandstanding). Lemon, Bash, and Tapper all excellent in my view.

However, the lead-in hour before the debates was awful because of the pundits on at that time. I do not ever watch CNN because too many of their talkers are unbearable. (Anderson and Lemon both excellent, but not on much of the time.)

Sanders and Warren both exhaust me with their manner, don't know why, I just want them to stop talking, please.

No huge standouts tonight, I'm lookin forward to tomorrow night. Klobuchar my favorite tonight.
