Rep. Tulsi Gabbard took aim at Sen. Kamala Harris in one of the more fiery moments of Wednesdays Democratic debate in Detroit, blasting the California senator and former prosecutor for her record on the death penalty, marijuana and other criminal justice issues.
Sen. Harris says shes proud of her record as a prosecutor and that shell be a prosecutor president, Gabbard said. But Im deeply concerned about this record. She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so.
She kept people in prisons beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California, Gabbard said. She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.
When you were in a position to make a difference and an impact in these peoples lives you did not, Gabbard said. And worse in the case of those on death row innocent people? You actually blocked evidence that would have freed them. Gabbard scolded Harris. You owe them an apology, she said.

May be she is positioning for VP.

(15,265 posts)I'm very impressed with her. She is calm and in control everytime I've seen her. She was very good in the debate and in the post debate interview with Anderson Cooper.
Her record has pluses and minuses. I have her in the #3 spot on my list.

(14,249 posts)to jump in to attack and accuse her critics, armed with articles intended to debunk any accusations against her - and its especially fortunate that her defender is a professed Bernie supporter eager to fight tooth and nail to defend Tulsis honor while not offering any visible support for their own candidate.

(14,249 posts)You must have at least as much to say about him and the cites to back it up as you had at your fingertips about Tulsi Gabbard.
Or wasnt there time to gather that info before a hastily-planned dive into the discussion to try to rehabilitate Tulsi after no one bought into the Tulsi Ate Kamalas Lunch narrative?

(18,378 posts)Press Release Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Issues Statement on Appeal
SAN FRANCISCO -- Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today issued the following statement on the decision to appeal the U.S. Central District of California court's ruling on the states death penalty. The court found that Californias death penalty is unconstitutional on the grounds that it takes too long for courts to consider and rule on defendants challenges to their convictions and sentences.
"I am appealing the court's decision because it is not supported by the law, and it undermines important protections that our courts provide to defendants. This flawed ruling requires appellate review."
https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-kamala-d-harris-issues-statement-appeal-court-ruling-california
It was crucial to appeal the judge's death penalty ruling because it was based on the premise that "the appeals process takes too long".
Why on earth would any lawyer interested in preserving civil liberties want that precedent to take root in state criminal law?

(7,447 posts)these are all just practice debates for the four candidates who have a shot at the nomination.
MAYBE Buttigieg, but I highly doubt it.
No one is really paying attention to any specifics.
We are learning some stuff, and we see some folks are more prepared than others (Warren clearly is the most comfortable in her own skin IMO which frees her up to just focus on issues).
But ultimately, any real movement at the top will happen (or not I suppose) in the fall debates when the pretenders are all eliminated.

(8,144 posts)in charge of evidence in over 100 cases was exposed as a drug addict and drug thief who fudged records and made numerous mistakes handling evidence. Harris knew this, but did not tell defense attorneys until forced to do so. 600 cases had to be dismissed.
Now this conduct was recent and is well documented.
Despite the source, Harris needs to answer to her record. And it is not as though she has so many
positive accomplishments on the other side of the ledger that any of this can be overlooked.
