Those off my list are those who attack other Democrats. You do that, off my list.
We hear enough attacks from the other side. You attack, you are doing Trump a favor.

(2,113 posts)No one else in my entire life has been able to motivate me to do that. I have been unaffiliated/Independent for over 35 years. Damn straight for the primary Beto is the only one who gets my vote. He EARNED it. No one else has.
During the primary is when people get to vote for who they believe will be the best president. That's what I'm doing. If you have a problem with that, well, that's too bad.

(9,114 posts)I'm having a harder time with a second choice than first. One more debate with fewer candidates should do it.
I thought Beto did far better Tuesday than he was given credit for. So based on that he passed several other candidates on my list.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
Indygram
(2,113 posts)But that's only part of the reason.
This will be my first time voting in a primary. The primary is closed where I live, so I wasn't able to vote before. I'm changing party from Independent to Democratic JUST so I CAN vote for Beto. That's how much I believe in him. If not for Beto I would not vote in the primary at all. He is the only reason I'm voting in it, so that primary vote goes ONLY to him.
Like Obama, he is running on a message of Hope and inspiration.
The path to the Whitehouse requires the support of Independents. Democrats CANNOT beat Trump without them.
As a lifelong Independent, I understand what appeals to Independents. Taking away private health insurance and repealing section 1325 will turn them off.
The only three I see capable of getting over 50% of Independents. are Beto, Biden and Klobuchar.
I don't think Klobuchar is charismatic enough to really energize voters like is needed. She had been someone I sort of had as a 2nd until she made a wisecrack that I found insulting towards Beto. I don't really like her anymore as a result.
I think Biden just has too much baggage and is too defensive to criticism and those qualities are easy prey for a narcissist. That would allow Trump to frame the entire race and that would hurt his chances. I don't dislike him. I just have too many years working with narcissists and seeing the devastation they leave in their wake and how they interact with different personality types. Both Biden and Harris would be unable to stay on message or gain the upper hand against Trump because they are too defensive in their reactions.
I have put A LOT of thought, consideration, balancing of personality traits/types and the best candidate to beat the living shit out of Trump is Beto.
Beto is battle tested and he has the perfect temperament for neutralizing narcissists. He WILL also deliver Texas and he can win everywhere because he has the same Hopeful kind of candidate that Obama was but he is more extroverted and better at retail politics than Obama was. He's also great at selling quite progressive policies to people who are not normally open to those ideas. He really has a gift for doing that.
As for the general, I'd vote for a steaming pile of dog crap over Trump.

(9,114 posts)So Buttigieg has many appealing positions and is very effective in the public arena. Being from a red state has been his calling card.

(2,113 posts)I actually just earlier voiced my concern about how Buttigieg being gay and married would likely impact the election if he were the nominee. I honestly don't care about any of those kinds of things. During a normal election, IF he were the most qualified and best option (I don't think he is) then I would gladly support him. That's not what we are dealing with though. As I referred to Trump in that other post...he's the frickin' Pied Piper of Hate Mongers. The majority of religious zealots in this country don't vote. If Buttigieg is the nominee you can bet your ass they will in numbers unlike anything we have ever seen before. Trump is NOT a decent person. He would use hate and bigotry and stoke the f*ck right out of it. He would purposely rile religious zealots up into a frenzy and tell them if they don't vote for him that a same sex couple will move into the White House. Since Buttigieg is not the best candidate and does not have any national political experience and because of the risks I just mentioned I do not support his candidacy for THIS time around. I'm solidly behind the idea AFTER we get the oxidized asshole out of the oval office, though.
We NEED to win, and can't afford to take that kind of a risk because we may not have a country left.

(2,113 posts)I am very methodical in how I decide who to vote for.
I vehemently oppose single payer, so anyone touting Medicare for All or anything that gets rid of employer based private insurance is automatically out for me.
Anyone who raised their hand to repeal section 1325 is also out. The majority of that section provides the ability to combat drug and human trafficking in areas between points of entry. I've lost loved ones from opiate addiction, so it's personal. Re-writing it or adding a provision that prevents it from being used in the way Trump is using it would suffice.
I support public charter schools since a public virtual charter school saved my own child's life. Anyone who blindly rails against public non-profit charter schools is automatically out.
There is only one position that Beto supports that I don't support, but it's not a deal breaker. I am fine with medical marijuana, highly regulated, but I don't support recreational use being legal. I know I'm in the minority on that position, so I'll live with not liking that one because I agree with him on everything else.
There is absolutely nothing anyone can do or say that will make me consider voting for anyone other than Beto O'Rourke for the primary.

(48,975 posts)terms of resume/experiience, gravitas, support from US allies, likability, and electability. There are several other candidates that I like for various reasons, but each of them has some minus (for me) with lack of experience, or problems with their background, or policy positions that could prove too unpopular in the GE. So I can't consider any of them a second choice yet.

(1,713 posts)I think Beto, Castro, Biden can win in Texas AND Florida. Any of our candidates will win the states Clinton won in 2016. What concerns me about Sanders and Warren and maybe Harris is they are not going to compete in Texas. Period and I just don't think they can win Florida. We have to expand the map not simply win more votes.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
Indygram
(2,113 posts)And he gets virtually no support from Independents, who are key to winning Texas. In all honestly, I don't even think Biden could pull out a win in Texas. Beto WILL win Texas if he is the nominee. The reason being...Independents like and trust him and they supported him in 2018. Trump is much less popular in Texas than Cruz is. In addition to that...there is a woman who used to be a Republican until Beto inspired her to switch. She canvasses EVERY week in red areas. Just this last week she canvassed over 4k voters. She does this consistently. Beto is winning not only with Democrats but overwhelmingly with Independents AND with moderate Republicans. Beto is BEATING Trump badly in red areas. Those voters who will end up deciding which way Texas goes are saying that for them it's either Beto or Trump. That means if the nominee is anyone other than Beto, many of those Independents and moderate Republicans who would choose Beto over Trump will not vote for another Democrat.

1. Warren--strong viability in nom and general IMO. She's a strong second choice for me, though we have some significant policy differences. I think she's pretty badass and so sharp.
2. Castro--weak in nomination right now, could be strong in general
3. Buttigieg--strong viability for nom, but I'll state my simple perception that the country is not ready for an openly gay president. I could be (and hope to be) very wrong
4. Beto--I think he stands little chance of getting the nom, but would be strong in the general

She has the "it" factor when addressing an audience. Also love Buttigieg and Klobuchar.
If we absolutely can't win without Biden, then fine - he can be the VP again. We get the comfort of guidance and stability while simultaneously attracting those who would be energized by a bold new direction. I think that is the only combination with Biden that would put it out of stealing distance.

With MJ Hegar running, I think Beto gives us our best overall map advantage bring Texas into battleground territory, and if pulled off it would also give us a net +1 on the Senate with MJ Hegars bid in Texas as well.
So, sticking to my focus only on the map, and given how well Biden polled in both Texas in June and Ohio more recently, Im going with Biden for 2nd. Really thinking about swapping that 1st/2nd spots as it is already.. Ohio is a VERY key indicator. No president has sat the office without Ohio since Kennedy in 1960.

(33,517 posts)...my second choice would probably be Pete Buttigieg. He's a very, very, very impressive young man.
These are the reasons I chose Warren, her mind and her demonstrated history of changing her mind.
The last great President with such a mind is the guy who preceded this abominable cretin, President Obama, the greatest President of my lifetime, and I'm an old man. As an intellectual President, with a clear mind and human compassion and decency Obama demonstrated what an outstanding intellect could do in office.
He was far superior to the other Professor elected to office, Woodrow Wilson.
Buttigieg is a scholar, a clear thinker. I would love an unprecedented Warren-Buttigieg ticket.
I like Joe Biden - he served admirably with the great President as VP, and I like Kamala Harris from what I've seen of her. All this said, I would be happy with almost any of the top tier candidates except Sanders. Of course, in the unlikely case Sanders won the nomination I would vote for him, but regret that my country made me choose the "lesser of two evils," although in Sanders case, it's a far, far, far lesser evil.
Among the lower tier, I'm fond of Yang since he thinks outside the box and actually seems to know what's happening, and Inslee because, although he demonstrates very little practical sense, he at least has identified the major threat to humanity as a whole, and who knows? He just might grasp some practical sense if he were in office. Beto's fire in his grief, as I've noted in another thread, is very impressive, most impressive.
We have a fine pool of candidates. There are a few lower tier who I wish would just go away since they're just grandstanding distraction machines, but they will go away eventually.

(22,236 posts)Biden was chosen for a total of 9 times as a 2nd choice by other candidate's followers. In 6 of those times he was chosen singularly as the 2nd choice, and 3 additional times he was chosen as an "either/or" with another candidate. For instance, a couple DU'ers said "Biden or Warren" would be their 2nd choice. There was also a "Biden or Inslee" as a 2nd choice by another DU'er.
Buttigieg was chosen 11 total times (6 times singularly as the 2nd choioce and 5 times as an either/or choice with another candidate).
Booker was chosen 2 times as an either/or choice with someone else such as "Booker or Warren" and "Harris or Booker." No one chose him as their only 2nd choice.
