Related: About this forum"An Aberration": How Joe Biden De-Presidented Donald Trump with a Single Speech
There was not a single time in the 25-minute speech that Biden uttered the word President immediately preceding Donald or Trump. Biden was withering and clairvoyant in his moral condemnation of how Donald Trump was using the office of the president to gin up the darkest corners of American homegrown terrorism, but not once - not for a single moment - did he recognize Donald Trump directly as the president of the United States. He referred to Trump plenty of times as this president (happenstance) or a president (undistinguished) and even our president (reminder that we can do something), but never as The President, a term that is usually reserved in the American lexicon for the contemporary holder of the Office of the President.

(10,147 posts)We went through a long stretch in the Spring where many commentators criticized Biden's campaign and Biden himself for being unexciting and backwards looking. He was criticized for being too touchy-feely. He hadn't put out much policy compared to Warren for example. He was roundly criticized for his first debate performance. Joe just wasn't doing what the Chuck Todd or Joy Reid wanted him to do or saying what they wanted him to say.
Yet he polled well despite all the criticism. And he rebounded nicely from the first debate and had a good second debate. His speech really made a great impression on everybody except the Dotard. And now even Chuck Todd and Joy Ried are singing his praises.

(7,277 posts)His election is the culmination of the Southern Strategy, envisaged by Goldwater and debuted by Nixon. The dumbing down of the Republican platform into racism and bigotry has been underway since the 1960s. By 2016, even a sock puppet could sell it.
It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. Hes just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years, a fear and anger thats rooted in our past but its also born out of the enormous upheavals that have taken place in your brief lifetimes.
... over the past few decades, the politics of division and resentment and paranoia has unfortunately found a home in the Republican party -Barack Obama

It was when he was talking about the Con's re-election and said "I will not let that happen". The crowd rose to its feet.
