What Muslim ban? 2020 Democrats go easy on Trump

(Note: this DU poster's daughter wrote this Politico article)

[link:https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/11/muslim-ban-2020-democrats-trump-1456151|

Muslim-American activists say their issues are getting short shrift in the Democratic primary.

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN 08/11/2019 06:55 AM EDT Updated 08/11/2019 07:16 AM EDT

Donald Trump’s travel ban triggered a nationwide backlash on the left — but in the eyes of many Muslims, you wouldn’t know it listening to the Democratic presidential hopefuls.

Now, Muslim operatives and activists are expressing alarm that their community has been all but neglected by the 2020 contenders as they focus on more prominent voting blocs. They say Trump has repeatedly antagonized Muslim Americans — not only with the travel ban barring most people from several majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States, but with his singling out of Muslim members of Congress — and based on the campaign, he appears to be getting away with it.

The travel ban was discussed for less than two minutes during the first two Democratic primary debates in June and July, they note. They say it's rarely mentioned in candidates' stump speeches, either.

Sorry folks but the candidates simply can't address every issue every day for everyone with a grievance. Look at the platform hopefully you will see the Democratic party position for you. Then look at the republicans plan and decide.

2. Or maybe win the primary, and general, by picking up a few votes from an underrepresented community?

We need every vote we can get, to win all three in 2020.

(that from an 100% biased Dad, of course!)

that a candidate can pick up, they will lose at least two non-Muslim votes. That's simply the reality in today's America.

If we weren't still reading stories about American servicemembers being killed in the Middle East, it might not be that way, but we've lost a steady string of people going back decades in an endless battle.

Or is it just a t-shirt slogan?

Cozying up to Islam is politically dangerous, especially since we've still got body bags coming back from that part of the world.

If that's not obvious to you, at least our candidates seem to be acting as if they are well aware of it.

And I don't blame our candidates for not touching this issue with a ten-foot pole. All I can say to your daughter is that things will get better under a Democratic President, no matter who the candidate is. 9/11 is still pretty fresh in the minds of the American electorate, and that's just the reality that the candidates have to deal with.

7. I read this in Amanda Marcotte's "Troll Nation" today:
Mon Aug 12, 2019, 12:41 AM
Aug 2019

"It was widely reported that Miller was the author of Trump's first attempt at a Muslim travel ban, and the policy was as badly designed as it was grossly bigoted. It took no time at all for courts to strike it down, and Miller was excised from later attempts to rewrite the travel ban to get it past the constitutional tests that the first ban clearly failed. But even though the administration got a little craftier about trying to make the Muslim ban seem a little less like a Muslim ban, judges continue to point to the original, Miller-penned Muslim ban as evidence of the original bigoted intent."

If that is correct it seems it's not going anywhere. Thanks, Stephen Miller.

8. other than Tulsi Gabbard i'm pretty sure none of the Democrats support a Muslim BAn

that actual fact that a democratic president does not support a muslim ban is important here.

<” In 2015, Gabbard was one of 47 Democrats to support legislation that would have made the refugee vetting process more restrictive, effectively grinding immigration from Syria and Iraq to a halt. She supported a resolution to prioritize immigration from non-Muslims in the Middle East. >

risks being branded "soft on terrorism". Like it or not, 9/11 is still pretty fresh in people's minds and a majority of Americans still support restrictions like the travel ban.

Sorry, not sorry if folks are offended but the stakes are just way too high in this election, for the nation as a whole, to have the Dem candidate to forcefully position themselves in opposition to a very popular travel ban and lose precious votes. Some key battleground states we need to re-take the White House will be won or lost by a razor thin margin. A few thousand votes can flip a state like Michigan or Wisconsin or PA into the Trump column again. We need literally every vote we can get in 2020, even people who support the travel ban.

She remained bitter about it until her death in the early 2000s. Time doesn’t always heal wounds. It will remain fresh while we still have bodies coming home in boxes from Iraq and Afghanistan and still see replays of the attacks on 9/11.

On Edit: I seem to recall part of the reason folks were upset about that young woman who walked around Kent State with a rifle was that memories were still “fresh” of the shootings that happened FORTY years ago.

The GOP feels like it has a lock on '9/11' somehow, even as they deny survivors benefits and hold first responder's medical care hostage for political purposes.

Stop ceding this ground to the other side.

Immigration is much bigger than just 9/11, and it's hurting people TODAY. Look at this shit:
