"Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg unveiled an ambitious plan on Tuesday to transform the economy of rural America, including spending $80 billion to provide high-speed internet and $50 billion over a decade to help farmers combat climate change.
Buttigieg, 37, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, also proposes dramatically increasing teacher pay in rural areas, reducing the shortage of teachers by half and spending $5 billion over a decade to ensure an apprenticeship program in a growing industry is available within 30 miles of every American.
Buttigieg was due to unveil his plan as he begins a two-day, seven-county swing through southeast Iowa. The Midwestern state kicks off the Democratic nominating contest in February."

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)Many rural areas across the country are dying, literally and figuratively. It is like a prolonged bought with a degenerative disease and there is no cure in sight, so far.
Unfortunately, many of those areas are also prone to believing in the thick morass of myths that the Republicans have honed and utilized in order to maintain power and serve the financial interests of their real constituents while hiding behind a facade of concern for family, jobs and the like.
If you address that issue directly, it may not have much of a short-term effect on low-information voters and people who are misinformed, (often over generations) then you begin the kind of change necessary for both an improvement in their overall circumstances, which is a matter of compassion as well as politics. That very much could allow for a political environment that is far more conducive to health, happiness and better education. In a generational sense, the cloud of corrupt, crony, exploitative, capitalist politics they are in could become more transparent and dissipate over time.
We need this intelligent and pragmatic type of strategy and should support and laud it with the hopes that it will become a prevalent aspect of the platform.
