the polling had Howard Dean, Dick Gephart and John Kerry as the frontrunners in Iowa. Lieberman was in 5th place by that time. Back in July, he was 4th. Dean was considered the frontrunner overall by fall of 2003.

I'm from Connecticut and don't recall Lieberman ever being considered a frontrunner.

Beto for Senate could energize voters to the point that his race could help whichever Dem gets the presidential nomination. These things can work both ways. That might very well be what happens.

As I posted similarly on another thread:

Beto is not running for Senate. He has said this repeatedly. I know supporters of other candidates would love to have Beto drop out now as the national audience is finally paying attention to him, though the circumstances are tragic.

1) There are excellent candidates already running for TX Senate. My favorite is MJ Hegar. All of this pointless speculation about Beto just hurts their chances by making them seem incompetent and has to be hurting their fundraising.

2) If anyone has glanced through Beto's background, in his race for El Paso City Council and for US Congress--he was the serious underdog--and he came from behind to win. When he declared for the Senate seat, everyone told him it was a political suicide mission--he came amazingly close in a MIDTERM and changed the face of TX politics--now everyone is talking that TX is a battleground state. He is not Sarah Palin--He is not going to quit

3) If any of these pleas for Beto to drop out were genuine, it wouldn't be DROP OUT NOW. The filing deadline isn't until December

4) Beto is doing the best of all of the candidates on calling out Trump and his racism and getting the media to follow suit. Why on earth would any Democrat want him off the national stage at this point? Even if he isn't your preferred candidate, he is weakening Trump.

5) Early polls before the primary don't have a great track record, especially in crowded primaries. History has plenty of examples of things changing as more typical voters start paying attention. In December 2003, here is a national poll that had Kerry at 4% and Edwards at 2%--guess who became the ticket? https://www.cbsnews.com/news/poll-dean-pulls-away-in-dem-race/

6) Here is what Ann Selzer, the Iowa polling guru, had to say just this week about the primary race: "Ann Selzer, who conducts the Iowa Poll for the Des Moines Register and in this cycle also for CNN, has earned through many presidential cycles a reputation as the best pollster of Iowa politics. From that experience, she offers two pieces of wisdom about how to think about the coming months of campaign here. The first is never to disregard dark horse candidates." and "Selzer’s second observation is a variation of the first. “I have seen enough elections to know how fast things can change and how common it is for things to change when we’re in the field doing the final poll before the caucuses,” she said." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/iowa-is-awash-in-candidates-but-dont-expect-clarity-until-the-very-end/2019/08/10/a52a6bba-bb72-11e9-a091-6a96e67d9cce_story.html?noredirect=on

7) If this wasn't total BS, then where is all of the concern about MA --republican governor and not long ago Scott Brown. Why isn't Pete running for Indiana Governor-- TX was ruby red when Beto took it on, why doesn't Pete drop out and show that he can transform a red state also--after all Obama won it and it has had recent blue Senators. I'm not calling for either Warren or Pete to drop out, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Many Texas Democrats want Beto to run for Senate so that we can turn Texas blue. This is from Juanita Jean https://juanitajean.com/beto-7/

From the Houston Chronicle.
So Beto, if you’re listening: Come home. Drop out of the race for president and come back to Texas to run for senator. The chances of winning the race you’re in now are vanishingly small. And Texas needs you.

We just don’t have a strong candidate for Senate in Texas. Beto powered-up can win Texas.

… a news reporter asked O’Rourke whether he felt there was anything President Trump could do to cool the atmosphere of hate toward immigrants.

“Um, what do you think?” O’Rourke responded bluntly. “You know the s*** he’s been saying. He’s been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. I don’t know. … Like, members of the press — what the f***? It’s these questions that you know the answers to …”

Come home, Beto. As an added bonus, think how Ted Cruz would have to buy a ladder, more intelligence, and sack of dignity to stand eye-to-eye with you.
