biden jumps into damage control after upsetting Latino leaders
Joe bidens presidential campaign is quietly playing cleanup with dozens of immigration activists and Latino leaders weeks after upsetting them by using what they considered loaded language to describe his views on immigration policy.
biden said at the July 31 Democratic debate that undocumented immigrants need to get in line and that the country has been right to cherry-pick high-skilled immigrants, notably those with advanced degrees.
That language, more commonly used by conservatives, triggered widespread criticism from immigrant rights activists, some of whom said the former vice president was echoing Republican talking points on how migrants are admitted to the United States.
The campaign quickly embarked on damage control. Aides assuaged aggrieved activists, and biden had a closed-door meeting with Latino leaders in San Diego before his speech at the UnidosUS conference last week.

But, to each his own.
One question, are dupe warnings posted when the same poll is posted over and over? I might have missed that.

(53,776 posts)I'm really starting to wonder. Every few days there have to be "clean ups" of gaffes and misstatements.
I will never get how any whites, whose ancestors all came here as immigrants when the gates were open with no requirements for advanced skills, can say "get in line". or want no immigration, or immigration only for those with highly developed skills.

"This bill would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are in this country illegally, a pathway that includes passing a background check, learning English, paying taxes and a penalty, and then going to the back of the line behind everyone whos playing by the rules and trying to come here legally," Obama said about immigration reform.
Snip...
This bill would modernize the legal immigration system so that, alongside training American workers for the jobs of tomorrow, were also attracting highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will grow our economy. And so that our people dont have to wait years before their loved ones are able to join them in this country we love.

(53,776 posts)the nomination. Obama isn't running and whatever he did he did as president. He wasn't trying to get the nomination against several other candidates with more progressive positions on immigration.
"Get in line" couldn't be more grotesque when you think about kids in cages on the border, families being separated by ICE with parents taken away and children left orphaned and Latinx being massacred in El Paso.
Please!

(45,077 posts)Activists interrupted Bidens remarks during last months debate in Detroit. And in early July, six demonstrators were arrested during a sit-in at Bidens Philadelphia campaign headquarters.
The tension between Bidens campaign and the activist community has roots in his overall campaign strategy. He's running as a centrist in a primary in which most of the other top-tier candidates are tilting left. And many liberal activists aren't enthused about an old, white moderate leading the ticket.
In the article from the OP.

(4,423 posts)You do realize that undocumented people that work in the USA are often paid slave labor wages, they most likely work for a legal company that takes advantage of them, they are forced to do unsafe work, and have no way to voice grievance because of their status. I suggest you rethink your position on these tasks you say you are unable to do yourself.

(8,144 posts)those undergoing a process by which to immigrate, live, work in the US, for millions of others to bypass any system at all. He has said he would do as Obama would have had he had Congressional support, put 11 million people now working in the US on a path to citizenship. He also wants to welcome those seeking asylum and expedite a legal process for that.
As to cherry-picking? He did not say a PHD would be given priority over a legal asylum seeker or
Dreamer or the millions of law-abiding undocumented workers who have been in the US for five to ten years. He said we ought to give citizenship to more PHDs. This is a whole other category, the folks who come to work and continue post doc studies here, for instance, in science and medicine.
They can apply for visas, get visas extended, but even if offered a long-term job are not necessarily on that basis able to get a green card.
I see nothing anti-immigrant, anti-Latino in what Biden said.
