YARMOUTH, MA A police chief on Cape Cod once again finds himself at odds with Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson, who called Warren out last year for saying America has a "racist" criminal justice system "front to back," is now criticizing the 2020 hopeful for her recent tweet about Michael Brown.
"5 years ago Michael Brown was murdered by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri," Warren tweeted Aug. 9. "Michael was unarmed yet he was shot 6 times. I stand with activists and organizers who continue the fight for justice for Michael. We must confront systemic racism and police violence head on."
Brown's death sparked protests and riots across Ferguson in the summer of 2014, but a Justice Department report the following year found Officer Darren Wilson had reason to fear for his life and did not find evidence to support the claim that Brown had his hands up when he was shot.
In a statement on the Yarmouth Police Department's Facebook page, Frederickson called the senator's comments "another slap in the face." Frederickson emphasized he did not want to make a political statement, but rather "set the record straight," and urged Warren to spend some time with a local police department.

(1,898 posts)The "front to back" line is a bit strong when taken out of context. When we include the courts, cash bail and aspects other than community policing, she's right. The problem is that her statement lumped in community policing, which has huge problems but is not racist front to back.
As a white guy, I don't have to worry about cops pulling me over for no reason. I suppose my biggest point is that all of the presidential candidates should be precise. On the one hand, tЯump peddles the notion that we don't have a single bigot in blue anywhere in the country and people who call out bigotry when it happens aren't patriotic.
On the other hand, we have cops committing murder after murder after murder of unarmed citizens, usually poor and/or of color AND ABSOLUTELY nothing changes. Tax dollars are spent on body cams and many cops turn them off with zero repercussions.
Until our dialog has the moral rectitude of dealing with the facts and nothing but the facts, piercing the great blue wall if necessary, we won't solve the problem.

(63,912 posts)so she should take up his suggestion to "spend some time with a local poilce department." He is one of her constituents after all. I think she could easily come through it with an A plus for her campaign (the way Obama did with his beer summit).
The polic chief could have his say and Elizabeth could have hers. I don't think she'd have anything to lose and her campaign could be greatly enhanced. And, I hope, the police chief could be satisfied that she is sincere.
Of course, if he is just a RWNJ then she should articulate her own view and let him stew...
