Warren urges NRC to delay transfer of Pilgrim license

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is calling on federal regulators to hold off on transferring the license of the now-shuttered Pilgrim nuclear power plant to a private company for decommissioning.

The Massachusetts Democrat said in a statement Thursday that "important questions" need to be answered before allowing Entergy's sale of the plant to Holtec International to go forward.

Staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the license transfer earlier this week. The approval will become final if none of the four NRC commissioners object before Monday.

Holtec promises a speedier cleanup and dismantling of Pilgrim, which closed permanently May 31.

But state officials have questioned whether Holtec has the financial resources and expertise to carry out decommissioning.
