Joe Biden is airing the first TV ad of his 2020 presidential campaign in Iowa Tuesday as part of a six-figure television and digital ad purchase in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.
The sixty-second television ad entitled "Bones" highlights the former vice president's work alongside former President Barack Obama and paints President Donald Trump as "an erratic, vicious, bullying president."
"We know in our bones this election is different. The stakes are higher. The threat more serious," a narrator says in the ad. "We have to beat Donald Trump and all the polls agree Joe Biden is the strongest Democrat to do the job. No one is more qualified."
"For eight years President Obama and Vice President Biden were an administration America could be proud of, our allies could trust, and our kids could look up to," the narrator says. "Together they worked to save the American economy, to pass the historic Affordable Care Act, protecting over 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions."

(49,091 posts)Btw, I did some checking and saw that Geraghty has been quoted on DU before, even though he's a conservative. He did a great column on Pete Buttigieg back in March that was posted here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/128735517
I do think this is a pretty good analysis of why the ad works.

The ad talks about a perennial bipartisan favorite promise, make a record investment in Americas schools, but it doesnt promise to wipe away everyones student debt. It talks about leading the world on climate, but doesnt promise a Green New Deal that would completely overhaul the entire economy and require retrofitting every building in America. It talks about restoring our alliances, but doesnt make any specific promises about Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, the Persian Gulf, or any other location where our men and women in uniform are at risk. And finally, the ad shows Biden hugging a tearful African-American teenager and declares hell restore the soul of the nation. (Promises without measurable metrics are among the easiest to keep!)
The Biden message has about as many hard edges and strong flavors as a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A lot of partisans will roll their eyes at this and label it soft-focus happy talk. But a lot of voters like soft-focus happy talk particularly those who arent on Twitter and who dont think about politics all the time!
Bidens playing a different game from the rest of the field. Hes not bothering to court the activist left; hes already making his pitch to the less partisan general election voters.
I'm glad Biden is aiming at Trump rather than other Democratic candidates.
