Still, his actions were not enough to inspire Americans to think of him as a top presidential contender, according to a new Morning Consult poll.
O'Rourke's campaign team suspended fundraising emails and political ads right after the shooting, but still made sure to emphasize how electable the candidate was after his speeches. Senior members of his staff retweeted media that claimed O'Rourke was "finding his voice" in the wake of the tragedy and emphasized that he made surprise trips to memorials and delivered fervent speeches without teleprompters.
Yet the latest poll, which surveyed 17,000 registered Democratic voters over the last week, found O'Rourke's chances at the presidency stagnant and weak. The Texan had just three percent of the national vote share and was in a three-way tie for 9th place with New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang. O'Rourke peaked, with about 8 percent of the vote in January, two months before he even officially announced his candidacy, but has steadily been declining in the polls since.

(43,157 posts)and that is what he will do. He is a truth teller, he is telling us who he is and what he believes, and this message takes time to resonate. He still has opportunity, but it may need crisis for the chance to be a serious contender. No matter, we need him in the race to define Trump's motives and character, because other candidates will move on to policy and message while Beto keeps on telling it like it is.

(43,157 posts)Double messages. Double messages are meant to confuse and control. The more subtle they are, the more confusing, and these operatives are very good at it. Once they have you confused by two subtly incongruous details, they have you ready to accept whatever they suggest to defuse your cognitive dissonance. Gotcha.
I sometimes point out the incompatible sides, and ask "what's going on here?" Discrediting them erodes their credibility. But they quickly move to the next subject or the next victim.

(393 posts)I see nothing wrong w/this post. It reported that Beto is not polling as well as his campaign expected after his El Paso outreach. There was no glee in his low poll numbers. You just didn't like that the headline was in CAPs?
The poster didn't make fun of Beto or his family. I really fail to see how this is bashing.
I personally think that maybe it's too soon to see any movement in the polls for Beto. Maybe in another week or so.

I think he can have it all eventually, after all he wowed sophisticated observers in TX, but my picture is he's suffering from running as an ultimately inadequate "youthful" alternative to Joe Biden especially. He has plenty of competition for being under 50, though I didn't realize he apparently stands alone as the only one who speaks truth. But that wonderful qualification aside, six years in the house of reps is very unimpressive on its own, much less when competing with VP Biden's 40 years in government and statesmanship.
What I also read, though, is that his campaign just wasn't ready to fly when the gun went off, or for some time after.
Well, he's not out yet.

(43,157 posts)I think he is the only candidate not in the top 5 who still has the potential to go the distance. Campaigns are funny. A stumble, an issue, a national emergency - all can shift in a fortnight. He needs to supplant his personal story in the narrative he tells with how his story shapes his vision for the country. Personal stories matter in a statewide campaign, but they are not as relevant for national office.

(4,760 posts)tier are pretty much locked in at this point no matter what those candidates do. The only thing that could shake them up would be something quite dramatic and unexpected happening in the top tier and that too might not do it. Beto will likely never recover from his poor first debate performance. There were these huge expectations and he faltered. It is really sad because he has a lot to offer the Democratic party and the country. These are crazy times and anything in politics is possible but at this point I don't think it is in the cards for Beto. I hope I am wrong.

But, he's young and can run another time around. Mayor Pete is also young and can run again.
I can easily see both of these men doing great things in the future, including being president.
Who knows, either could still pop farther up as the voting actually begins.

Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards isnt afraid of a competitive race. In 2015, she finished first in an eight-way race for At-Large Position 4, then cruised to victory in a runoff. And thats good, because the municipal finance attorney could face two similarly competitive contests in 2020. Edwards on Thursday announced that she is seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican John Cornyn, a powerful and well-funded incumbent who has yet to draw a serious challenger in the GOP primary.
But Edwards will first have to survive a crowded primary. The Democratic field already includes former Houston congressman Chris Bell, Air Force combat veteran MJ Hegar, and activist Sema Hernandez. State Sen. Royce West of Dallas is expected to formally declare his own bid for the Senate on Monday. And there are other Democrats known to be eyeing the Senate race or being eyed, perhaps, by wistful Democrats who see them as potentially strong candidates. Beto ORourke has so far stuck by his decision to launch a long-shot bid for president rather than for the Senate, following his impressive campaign last year against Texas other GOP senator, Ted Cruz.
The sheer number of plausible Democratic candidates for Senate in 2010 is telling. The last time Cornyn was on the ballot, in 2014, Texas was such a safe red state that Democrats struggled to muster credible candidates, much less competitive ones, for statewide races. The real contest, in that cycle, was in the Republican primary, which Cornyn won with 60 percent of the vote before cruising to a 26-point general election win.But Cornyn himself has been among the Republicans sounding the alarm in the wake of the 2018 midterms that, this time, Democrats truly do pose a real threat. We are, I think, no longer the reliably red state we have been, he told the Texas Tribunes Abby Livingston last month.
And Edwards, a graduate of Eisenhower High School in Aldine ISD who went on to earn a Harvard University law degree, agrees. On Thursday, at her campaign kickoff at DeLuxe Theater in Houstons Fifth Ward, she told supporters that she expects the real fight to be in the Democratic primary. Does anybody read Malcolm Gladwell? Edwards asked Thursday evening, referring to the author of David and Goliath and other books. She explained that she would, as the Democratic nominee, be seen as David vs. the Republican Goliath, but that she would highlight the advantages that the former had in his battle against the giant.
