Harris' support plummets after Democratic debates

A new CNN poll shows that former Vice President Joe Biden's lead in the Democratic field has increased, while Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., saw her support among registered Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters drop by 12 percentage points since June.

Biden's support increased by seven percentage points as 29% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters said they would vote for Biden, according to the poll by CNN and the survey firm SSRS.

Five percent of the voters surveyed said they backed Harris, down from the 17% support she enjoyed in June.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., had the second and third largest pools of support, respectively. Fifteen percent of respondents said they'd vote for Sanders, and 14% favored Warren.

...that Jack Webb (Sgt. Friday) never actually said that! I was shocked.

Back to the subject, though - I think that CNN poll is an outlier, her support has dropped but in that poll everyone is within a point or so of their previous numbers, hers dropped 12. Something went wrong somewhere.

Harris is now considerably weaker across the board. She dropped by over 10 points with whites and nonwhites. She declined by 9 points or more with those under the age of 50 as well those aged 50 and older.

Her biggest drop might have been among liberals. She went from 24% in late June to only 4% now... When asked which candidates they'd like to hear more about, 30% said Harris in late June. That was more than any other candidate. Now, only 18% say they want to hear more about Harris... For now, the polling puts Harris not in the first or even second tier.

Her numbers appear volatile and I think she overplayed her hand in the first debate, while ineffectively addressing Gabbard's attack in the second. The third debate and coming months may well change everything for her, though. We shall see.

Despite the Biden supporters who vilified her for taking on Joe in the first, I thought she played to her strengths. Not a Californian, my first direct impression of Harris was how she reduced Kavanaugh to a sniveling heap in those hearings. No nonsense and aggressive are good qualities to me and I think to others in selecting an opponent for Trump. She pushed the envelope on that in the first debate and I felt some of the blowback was a bit misogynistic. Her numbers leapt as she looked like a sharp attack dog. But in the second debate, she took it on the chin from Gabbard and she did not handle it well. We can argue about whether the attacks were warranted and it seems to me they were mostly bullshit. The point is that she did not look sharp in handling the criticism and I believe thats what took a lot of wind out of her sails at this point. Trump will not be attacking based on truth, so not being able to blow that off from a lesser troll in Gabbard took away some of Kamala's luster. Just my opinion.

She's still not nearly as well-known as Biden, Sanders and even Warren. And as I wrote below, expectations were inflated following the 1st debate.

I as an African American man am getting fed up with these daily attack threads right here on allegedly progressive DU on the only black woman in the race.

OK, fine, you can expect some push back from Biden and even DINO Gabbard supporters right after the debates but they were weeks ago and this is now just about daily on DU.

Makes one wonder if race is involved?

Harris has been attacked daily simply because Biden was not prepared for the first debate.

I know the trolls are working over time against her, but people who have been here for years seem to have taken the bait, and are posting hit piece after hit piece on her. It's the same kind of crap that happened with Hillary in 2016 when the trolls flooded DU with their hate and lies. I would think people would be smarter than to fall for it again!

It's still too early to put a lot of stock in polling. Name recognition is still the #1 factor more than 5 months out from voting.

All we can really say at this point is that less than half the people in the race have a shot. There are a dozen who are never going to gain traction.

Most people, more than 5 months out from voting, aren't going to bother trying to distinguish between 20 candidates. Name recognition still rules at this juncture.
