Joseph R. Biden Jr. seemed momentarily caught off guard on Wednesday in a nationally televised climate change forum about whether a host of a fund-raising event for him had ties to the fossil fuel industry. Mr. Biden, who has pledged not to take money from oil and gas executives, was confronted by an audience member about a high-dollar fund-raiser on his schedule on Thursday in New York with an executive named Andrew Goldman.
Mr. Biden denied Mr. Goldman was a fossil fuel executive. The pledge he signed binds him not to take contributions of more than $200 from S.E.C.-named executives of fossil fuel companies. The former vice president told the CNN host Anderson Cooper that Mr. Goldman was not listed as an executive in fossil fuel company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Thats what we look at, Mr. Biden said.
Mr. Cooper, who seemed apprised in advance of the issue raised by the audience member, pressed Mr. Biden, saying Mr. Goldman has a company called Western LNG that announced it was building an offshore terminal in western Canada to export natural gas.
Well, I didnt realize he does that, Mr. Biden replied. Im going to look at what you just told me and find out if thats accurate.

(7,864 posts)The Sanders supporter that asked the question claimed that Goldman was a fossil fuel executive; he apparently is not, which is why Anderson Cooper actually had to clarify Goldman's position at the end of Biden's town hall. Shame on that Sanders supporter and shame on CNN for allowing an unvetted question with a false premise to be asked like that.

(7,609 posts)Goldman and Biden have deep ties: Goldman served as an adviser to Biden while he was in the Senate and was the northeast director of finance for Bidens 2008 campaign.

Biden is top choice for climate-minded 2020 voters: Poll
"Former Vice President Joe Biden is the top choice for president among likely Democratic voters who are focused on the climate, according to a new poll.
The online poll, released Monday as a collaboration between the Sierra Club and Morning Consult, limited its results to voters who said candidates' plans for the climate are an important factor in their vote.
While Biden would be the top choice for 37 percent of climate-minded voters, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) came in second and third with 19 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
The results echo other national polls of Democrats, which have largely found Biden far ahead of Sanders and Warren, with the senators in a tough fight for second place.
