New Wisconsin Poll Shows Increasing Strength for the Left
First, Sanders is exploding with a whopping 39 percent support. In second place is Joe Biden with 24 percent. While its true that Biden has not yet formally declared his candidacy, its not as if hes not a known quantity, either. You either like Joe Biden or you dont; your opinion isnt likely to change based on new information. Meanwhile, Warren is still performing very strongly, with 14 percent despite having been the first major candidate to enter the race. All others trail well behind in single digitsincluding neighboring Amy Klobuchar with only 4 percent.
Most notable from this survey is the combined numbers for Sanders and Warren. Yes, in previous polls a significant number of (presumably older white) voters liked both Sanders and Biden as their top two for reasons that are likely more deplorable than ideological. But Warrens vote total is not so easily dismissed: Warren has a very particular anti-plutocratic, anti-establishment brand. While some (small) number of Sanders supporters may flee to the next nearest white male if he collapses, Warrens are quite unlikely to do so. Her supporters will shift ideologically to the next most progressive candidate.
In terms of electability, Trump performs poorly against Biden, Sanders, and Warren, He does no better than hitting even against the others: Sanders and Warren both beat Trump by four points in Wisconsin, and Biden beats him by 8.
As for ideology? Democratic primary voters show a marked preference for a shift to the left:

(28,270 posts)Bernie and Warren kicking *** in Wisconsin!
The base of the Democratic Party is making a huge move to the left! The centrists in the race will soon be seeing the writing on the wall and dropping out.
IMO of course.

(45,084 posts)to fight Trump Of course I'm still trying to figure out how you can be fighting against someone when you are reaching across to work with them from their starting point because they have proved time and again it's their way or no way. Maybe the electorate is smarter than some people think or say.

(28,270 posts)move the party to the left, 31% want policies slightly to the left.
30% want to stay as is and only 15% want a move to the right.
31 plus 24 left looks like a majority to me.

(14,565 posts)Who cares about primary ideology? That is a race to masochism. Wisconsin is a classic swing state at 9% more conservatives than liberals, which is exactly the same as the national number. If we continue to believe Wisconsin is a cinch there is major danger of nominating someone from the far left who will be rejected by the electorate, just like Gillum and the 46% who said he was too liberal for Florida.
Polling far ahead of time means absolutely nothing. That is exactly what got Hillary into trouble. She relied on idiotic state polling instead of understanding the gender, demographic and ideological breakdown of each state. Wisconsin is a problem in a general election because females are only 51% of the vote in presidential years, compared to 53-54% nationally and in most other states. The electorate is 86% white, which should be enough of a hint in itself.
Perhaps the worst combination of all is a very liberal and activist primary base in a moderate state. Huge potential to send the wrong signal and absolutely butcher margin for error.

(34,661 posts)Those Independent and Dem Voters who crossed over to vote for Trump are in deep hurt Financially. The Rethugs picked their Pockets one to many times.
That is my home State . Wages are flat if not trending downward. Major Reassessments of Property Values in order to Cash Flow Counties. The big give ways to the Corporate Sector by Walker and Crew is now coming home to roost. The Dairy Business which sustained the State for Decades is losing 15 farms per week. The Paper Industry in the Green Bay area just lost 3 major plants in the last year.
And nothing in place to either retrain these thousands of people who just lost their sources of income. Sad to say most drank the Kool Aide handed out by the Walker/Trump crew. But,this is why Wisconsin is heading back to the Progressive days of lore.
