(1,399 posts)Though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully. My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee. Acknowledging this now is in the best interests of those in the campaign; it is in the best interests of this party as we seek to unify around a nominee; and it is in the best interests of the country.

(32,973 posts)Snip--"To Mr. ORourke and his allies, it has been evident for some time that he was confronting a vanishingly slim path forward. At the last Democratic debate, a pair of Mr. ORourkes donors flew to Ohio to meet with him about his campaign and the possibility of him quitting the race to run for Senate in Texas against John Cornyn, who is up for re-election. Mr. ORourke told them he was not running for Senate, according to people familiar with the matter.
A spokesman to Mr. ORourke reiterated that stance on Friday.
Beto will not be a candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas in 2020, said Rob Friedlander, an aide to Mr. ORourke."

(348 posts)That is his passion and he is excellent in speaking about the horrors of gun violence in America.
We can all serve our country in many ways - it doesn't just have to be as an elected official. He starts his own grassroots anti-gun group or takes over an established one and gets out there and fights - he could do so much good for us. He's famous now so when he talks, cameras will show up. That is half the battle (or more) these days.
He was not my candidate (he was my mother's though!) -- but I am very proud of him.
