Kamala Harris talks bluntly about race: 'Apparently, probable cause is being black in your own room'

Harris, who is running for president, mentioned the death of Atatiana Jefferson, a 28-year-old black woman shot and killed in her home by a white Fort Worth, Texas, police officer on Oct. 12. The officer shot her through her bedroom window, according to the Dallas Morning News.

During Harris' town hall at Lincoln's Pub, which had a crowd of about 240 people, a woman asked the candidate how she would heal divisions in the United States. Harris said she will encourage uncomfortable conversations about the country's history.

She accused fellow Democrats of trying to heal the country "based on some inauthentic view of what unity looks like." She said members of her party use the term "identity politics" to discourage conversations with minorities. She called the term "the modern version of the race card."

"It's a term that, I find, is raised whenever we're talking about issues that are essentially civil rights issues," she said. "About race, gender, orientation, religion — things of that nature. And it is raised with the intention of marginalizing the issue. Or shushing or shutting us up. And here's the thing about it: When we talk about where America stands on these issues, that's not about identity politics — someone's identity. It's about America's identity. Where America stands on those issues is about America's identity."

She continued: "Unity for the sake of unity is not unity. Unity — true unity — is not just, 'Hey, everybody come under one roof and let's sing a kumbaya song.' That's not unity. It's not unity to say, 'Hey, you guys, you should be a little bit quieter about your thing.' That's not unity. Unity is when everybody is in the room and there is mutual respect and acknowledgment about issues that each faces — that's my vision of unity. And I know we can get there."

But Tuesday's speech, with criticism of a specific police shooting and an attack toward members of her own political party, was bolder than Harris' past discussions about race. Some members of the crowd said they were impressed.

Well stated IMO. Current PD behavior has made gone so far as making "staying at home while black" a potential capital offense.
