Trump trails Democratic rivals in national survey as independents move away

One year out from the 2020 election, President Trump trails some potential Democratic rivals in head-to-head matchups, with his national support level currently fixed at about 40 percent, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The new poll highlights the degree to which most of the country already has made a judgment about the president’s performance and their voting preferences next year. Among the 39 percent of registered voters who approve of Trump’s job performance, Trump is winning at least 95 percent support against each of five possible Democratic opponents. But among the 58 percent of voters who disapprove of Trump, he receives no more than 7 percent support.

Former vice president Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) run strongest against the president nationally, with Biden leading by 17 points (56 percent to 39 percent), Warren by 15 points (55 percent to 40 percent) and Sanders by 14 points (55 percent to 41 percent).

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), the other two Democrats tested against Trump, also lead the president among registered voters, with Buttigieg up by 52 percent to 41 percent, and Harris ahead by 51 percent to 42 percent.

The poll reflects national findings; other surveys in the states expected to play an outsize role in the 2020 contest have shown tighter races, particularly in parts of the upper Midwest that Trump flipped from Democrats in 2016.

Battle ground state poll yesterday. There is no way Democratic candidates can be up this big in national polls and not have a bigger lead in those battle ground states. That poll was worse than Hillary's polls in those states in 2016. Hillary's national lead was only 3% just before the election and she lost Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan by 78,000 votes.

4. If it were a national popular vote election

then that poll cited here would mean something.

But then we would all be talking about President Hillary Clinton and her new additions to the ACA.

Like it or not... Trump can lose California and New York by millions of votes... and it means nothing.

The swing state match ups are real... and we would be idiots to ignore them.

9. Sure they can...because the votes in national polls include California and New York which

increases the lead in areas we are already winning. but the state polls don't have so many progressives so they tell the EC story...while national polls are useful in the popular vote calculations...the EC is more important as we all know.

in the General Election meme. How about being concerned about the
Third Party Voters Dems lost in 2016. How many would come out and vote
for a Progressive Democrat in those same States? Don't ever see that Question
posed or polled.

3rd Party/other vote was 5.7% in 2016. Run with the “safe” choice again this time around and I wonder which direction that figure goes.

Unless the RW smear machine can cook up enough fake evidence to seriously harm him.

In one way, it would be hilarious, I think, if Trump were to lose his Presidency or the 2020 election over crimes committed in the attempt, and one of our other amazing candidates ended up as our actual nominee in the 2020 Presidential election.
