Hickenlooper thinks men might need a leg up to the WH

Twitter Moments @TwitterMoments 1h1 hour ago
“How come we’re not asking, more often, the women, ‘Would you be willing to put a man on the ticket?’” Democratic presidential hopeful John Hickenlooper asked during a CNN town hall.

Matt Viser @mviser 2h2 hours ago
John Hickenlooper, asked if he’d pledge to nominate a woman as vice president if he is the nominee, says, “Of course.” And then adds: “How come we’re not asking the women more often: Would you put a man on the ticket?”

If you wanted to broach the subject, the proper response would be (what he said) followed by 'just as I'm sure any of our wonderful female candidates wouldn't hesitate to put a man on their ticket, if they felt he was the best choice' ...

Definite flub-up here.

Had to deal with enough of those false equivalents when I worked. “I’m Scottish. I’ve been discriminated against, too. Why isn’t anyone doing something for me? “ I heard that at my workplace.

I never thought Hickenlooper stood a chance in the primary race. Didn't support him.

But, he's built a solid political career. Decades of service. And yet all the talk today is over his slip of the tongue. I'm sure he was pointing out that America's next president could very well be a woman, so it's as legitimate to ask whether she might choose a man as her VP as it is to ask a man whether he'd consider a woman on his ticket.

The way he phrased it was unfortunate. Now there's no way of explaining it away. That's all it takes these days to sink a campaign.

Doesn't bother me that Hickenlooper may be out of the race, but it makes me nervous that Buttigieg or another quality candidate (like Warren and her Indigenous ancestry issue) could get tripped up by something blown out of proportion.

...and it's not the first 'slip' from Hickenlooper.

This isn't new. Politicians have been held to account for what they say since the beginning of elections. Communicating their beliefs is literally one of the most prominent things they will be tasked to do as president.

And this isn't 'blown out of proportion.' It's a serious tell for those of us accustomed to having our complaints about racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, turned back on us as if discussing those abuses is the abuse itself.

What Hickenlooper is doing here is trying to deflect from what he obviously considers an untoward suggestion, despite the answer he gave previous. He's resentful about being asked, displaying typical umbrage.

What I'd ask him is why he believes his candidacy would be more significant for women than electing a female to the office.

I'm not familiar enough with Hickenlooper's history to go all out in defending him. If his track record indicates that he's more of an "old boy's network" type of operator then I feel no sympathy for him.
