The Amendment King: Bernie's House Years

Nov 20, 2019

Bernie Sanders' election to Congress transformed the political landscape of Vermont. People think of Vermont as a blue state, but when Bernie Sanders was elected to Congress the seat had been held by Republicans for decades. As a congressman, Bernie was so effective at passing amendments that he was called "The Amendment King."

In order to call yourself the "King."

Sanders career as a politician.

90 amendments passed. 21 by way of roll call.

During Sanders great amendment height, Traficant passed one fewer roll call vote and seventy-two more amendments.

If one has to tout their record as the "Amendment King"........

6. 90 amendments, 21 by roll call, meaning 69 were by voice vote. So none of those 69...

...were earthshatteringly significant. As for the roll call amendments, 21 in 16 years, that's 1.3 per year. I think this was an inconvenient road to go down.

has earned his title by attaching incrementalist amendments to moderate bills?

Oh my... can't wait for all the progressive outrage to hit the fan!

And he was able to get this work done in a republican Congress as well as in democratic ones.

Something not all of our lawmakers can say.

8. In his 16 years, 8 sessions in the House, Democrats had the majority in 3, republicans in 5.
