Bloomberg: US would benefit from more, not fewer, immigrants

AP News

PHOENIX (AP) — Presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that the United States needs “an awful lot more immigrants rather than less.”

On his second day campaigning for the Democratic nomination, the former New York City mayor contrasted his views on immigration with President Donald Trump’s restrictive policies and laid out a vision of a multicultural society enriched by immigrants.

“We need immigrants to take all the different kinds of jobs that the country needs — improve our culture, our cuisine, our religion, our dialogue and certainly improve our economy,” the billionaire told reporters at a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix.

He blasted Trump’s policies that resulted in the separation of families arriving on the border.

so easy to dismiss those who do the actual work.

There is no way anyone earns a billion dollars. The fact that our economic system allows people to accumulate that much wealth is a systemic problem with that system.

Immigrants are a big profit center for the US, mostly from their kids. And also some more from grandkids and beyond. Steve Jobs. Sergei Brin. People who fled from Nazis. The Chobani yogurt guy. A million restaurants selling every kind of yummy foreign based food. I just cooked garbanzo beans for Thanksgiving hummus so middle eastern food is on my mind. And I need immigrants to pay social security and Medicare taxes which are so important to me. Trump has probably reduced the supply of foreign grad students who do so much of the work in our science labs. I bet crsprcas9, which will be worth a zillion trillion dollars in our economy, was accelerated because of foreign grad students in Berkeley and Cambridge Mass. Well maybe not zillions but certainly tens of trillions, minimum, literally. Immigrants are an economic gold mine.

A bit of a long shot, but a shot nevertheless. And he did a walk-on on the debate Saturday night (SNL)
