Bernie is the solution to everything. His highlighting the

value of human life with Medicare for All addresses the 4,500 people that die each month because it’s too expensive to save them. How can human rights be respected by letting thousands of people suffer more and die earlier every month. Start giving people hope and reasons to live instead of showing them they are expendable.

30. This kind of rhetoric is getting dangerous
Wed Jan 8, 2020, 10:10 PM
Jan 2020

The immediate connection one gets may be "Only I can fix it" but it is more problematic than just simple slogans.
The solution to everything is the kind of thing you imagine hearing before a cult does something really bad to themselves or others.

Further, it is important to realize that no person has a monopoly on good ideas, that you have to work together and cooperate to achieve anything and that there may be several paths to reach a goal. Some with better outcomes, some more achievable than others.

I know you mean well but this is the kind of rhetoric that leads to some people becoming unapproachable for any kind of reasoning who would otherwise be on our side. We saw effects of that in 2016.

but when you start thinking they're the solution to everything, you're getting sucked into a cult of personality in which you can't imagine any faults or errors on the part of that person - and that way lies disaster. That way lies Trumpism and all kinds of hell. The Democrats have a great slate of candidates but every last one of them has personal faults, areas of inexperience and incidents of mistakes. These are human beings and not gods. Bernie is by no means the solution to everything. Maybe even not anything, since he has to get all of his proposals through Congress. And good luck with that.

50. His ideas are brittle and don't reflect the reality of how laws are made
Thu Jan 9, 2020, 01:08 AM
Jan 2020

His solution for health care? One big idea, despite the fact that replacing private insurance with a single Medicare pool is both massively unpopular and has no actual way of passing any electable Congress. Despite the fact that existing systems (Medicaid, private insurance, the VA, etc.) are widely liked by the people using them. Despite the fact that financing reform would cause a huge number of hospitals and practices to have to consolidate, and would not solve the issue of having a shortage of GPs everywhere except the richest cities.

Similarly his idea on financial reforms is simply "break up the banks", despite the fact that he can never answer what that actually means or what he would like the post-break-up financial sector to actually look like. Does he want forced equity splits like the Bell break-up? High enough capital requirements to discourage growth past a certain size? A fire sale of classes of assets (and would this mean he thinks a less diversified financial sector is somehow safer)? No word on what this "policy" is actually trying to achieve other than meeting the mandate of a politically popular bumper sticker, "break up the banks".

Bernie Sanders is a good person, but he's single-mindedly intent on winning an election, specifically the 1972 Presidential election. That's not the race we need to win this year.

The only resemblance to cult submission is believing that millions of people that can’t afford or are denied health insurance is status quo incrementalism on the way to solutions.

The very fact that a Democratic Socialist is a prominent politicians should sound the alarm that people are being abused. Foreign countries did not steal US jobs. US financiers invested US money to take advantage of inhuman foreign wages.

"single payer or nothing!"

Nixon was offering something that was to the left of the ACA.

Ted Kennedy said it was one of the big regrets of his political career - if he had stayed at the table, instead of walking away, we might have something much closer to what Canada has now.

We shouldn't repeat the mistakes of the past....

Asked about his greatest regret as a legislator, Ted Kennedy would usually cite his refusal to cut a deal with Richard Nixon on health care.

It was back in 1971 and President Nixon was concerned that he would once again have to face a Kennedy in the next year's election -- in this case a Kennedy with a proposal to extend health care to all Americans. Feeling the need to offer an alternative, Nixon asked Congress to require for the first time that all companies provide a health plan for their employees, with federal subsidies for low-income workers. Nixon was particularly intrigued by a new idea called health maintenance organizations, which held the promise of providing high-quality care at lower prices by relying on salaried physicians to manage and coordinate patient care.

At first, Kennedy rejected Nixon's proposal as nothing more than a bonanza for the insurance industry that would create a two-class system of health care in America. But after Nixon won reelection, Kennedy began a series of secret negotiations with the White House that almost led to a public agreement. In the end, Nixon backed out after receiving pressure from small-business owners and the American Medical Association. And Kennedy himself decided to back off after receiving heavy pressure from labor leaders, who urged him to hold out for a single-payer system once Democrats recaptured the White House in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

..............................

The simple lesson from this story -- and certainly the one Kennedy himself drew -- is that when it comes to historic breakthroughs in social policy, make the best deal you can get, leaving it to subsequent generations to perfect. That's what happened with Medicare and Medicaid, and there is no reason to think it wouldn't happen again with universal coverage and reform of the health insurance market.

He didn't invent single payer, nor was he the first to do so.

Politicians promising people something that won't happen doesn't help anyone.
