Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSunrise Movement Endorses Sanders
Once a fledgling collection of college students, frustrated that Democrats and Republicans were not acting more quickly to curb climate change, Sunrise has grown to 318 chapters nationwide, with more than 10,000 members.
Sunrise will host an event on Jan. 12 with Mr. Sanders in Iowa City to formally announce the endorsement. We believe a Bernie Sanders presidency would provide the best political terrain in which to engage in and ultimately win that struggle for the world we deserve, Varshini Prakash, a founder and the executive director of the movement, said in a statement. Senator Sanders has made it clear throughout his political career and in this campaign that he grasps the scale of the climate crisis, the urgency with which we must act to address it, and the opportunity we have in coming together to do so.

I think an organization pushing those that are likely to support them to support them more fully or overtly or opening isn't a bad social movement tactic.

We have two parties...Democratic and Republican...thus all these splinter groups that attack our side are enabling Republicans and are dead to me.

(4,921 posts)You made a comment about them. I asked if you had a problem with them. How is that NOT the point. If anything, you are the one doing the deflection from an endorsement by young activists to an unrelated issue about PACs (which the Sunrise Movement is clearly not).

September 20, 2019 Global Climate Strike
On September 20th, Sunrise participated in the Global Climate Strike, the largest day of action for climate justice in world history. Over 3 million people chose to #StrikeWithUs at over 4,000 events in 150 countries. The generation of the Green New Deal took over in the U.S., and young and old strikers alike voiced demand for serious climate action across the globe.
June 2019 DNC Headquarters Climate Debate Sit-In
Washington, D.C.
Sunrise brought the demand for a Climate Debate to the front steps of the Democratic National Headquarters in Washington, D.C., blocking the locked entrance to the building with a sit-in for three days.
April 2019 Road to a Green New Deal Tour
1,400 people packed into a sold-out Strand Theatre in Boston to launch the Road to a Green New Deal Tour, in what was the largest Sunrise event to date. Speakers included Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren (via video), Representative Ayanna Pressley, Sunrise co-founder Varshini Prakash, and community and union leaders, including Reverend Mariama White-Hammond and the students who led the Boston Youth Climate Strike. After eight cities across the country and over 200 town halls in 46 states, the tour concluded in Washington, D.C. in a sold-out theater at Howard University. Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, author and journalist Naomi Klein, and executive director of Justice Democrats Alex Rojas were among the speakers who brought the Road to a Green New Deal
February 25, 2019 Washington, D.C.
For a week in February 2019, young Kentuckians walked out of school and showed up outside Mitch McConnells office every day, asking him to look them in the eyes and tell them that the $1.9 million hes received from oil and gas CEOs is more important than our generations future. When he refused to meet with them, they came to DC and joined hundreds of Sunrisers to challenge him and put all Senators on notice: If you stand with #OilMoneyMitch and the fossil fuel billionaires, well come for you at the ballot box.
Just a few. But Im sure you are doing so much more.

(68,582 posts)I read all of that...but where is the registering of like minded voters? They support whatever group and all...but it was Kentuckians who began the attempt to hold McConnell accountable...and the doctored video is unforgivable really. Have they gone into red and or purple states and tried to register voters or get their message out? Nope. I don't support them and would never support any of their candidates in a primary.

(35,454 posts)Together with Justice Democrats and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the group organized a sit-in in the office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, which brought Sunrise its first significant press coverage.[3] Sunrise organized a similar event in February 2019, bringing a group of young people to confront Senator Dianne Feinstein in her office.

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN, Becca Rast will be the campaigns national field director, after managing Jess Kings unsuccessful campaign for Congress in Pennsylvania last year. She was a board member of the Sunrise Movement, a group of young environmental activists pushing for the "Green New Deal."
Please note she is a board member of Sunrise movement and managed King's (endorsed by Sanders who held rallies for him) losing campaign...so Sunrise has board members who work for the Sanders campaign and Sunrise endorsed Sanders...wow how not surprising. Sanders endorsed her candidate and now she works for him and she is on the Sunrise board.

(58,785 posts)Sanders has NO record of significant achievement even in those issues he's been passionately devoted to, which are basically limited to economic universalist ideologies, and he has a very long record of failing to influence others around him. He's been self exiled in the center of power for nearly 30 years.
Biden, otoh, has been an important ally in congress for environmental groups for decades.
This is a very foolish, impractical endorsement, and I'm disappointed in this group, not surprised, but it's natural to hope for better with so much at stake.
VERY fortunately, we have many very serious professional climate warriors (who ran for congress and state governments to work on climate etcetera from within the centers of power), and they are working with private sector counterparts around the nation and planet who don't let politics lead them down rabbit holes.

They had some good connections in climate groups interested in what they could contribute. But there was overlap, and this vote suggests the political power seekers won. They may have been flooded with fringe types also. I don't know. I also don't know that they're a lost cause just because of this.
But I remember the Green Party as being started long ago by some intelligent, well meaning people to organize people to create an environmentally healthy nation, but almost as soon as they opened for business they were flooded with the kind of dysfunctional sorts who tend to rotate through today. At least the L.A. one I was very interested in joining, and then immediately not.
