CNN: Democrats slept on Bernie Sanders. Now he's surging as Iowa approaches

By Gregory Krieg and Ryan Nobles, CNN

Updated 4:23 PM ET, Thu January 9, 2020

Excerpts:

(CNN)--He has been dismissed, shrugged off, and, most gratingly to his campaign and supporters, ignored for long stretches by other leading primary rivals and national political pundits.

But with less than a month before the Iowa caucuses, this volatile 2020 presidential primary has taken yet another eye-popping turn: Bernie Sanders is being recognized by the Democratic establishment, sometimes in puzzlement and others in fear, as the real deal -- a legitimate contender, even a front-runner, to become the party's next presidential nominee.

It happened slowly, then, as the year turned, seemingly all at once. Maybe it was his fourth quarter fundraising total -- $34.5 million, more than anyone else and a personal best -- or the recent early-state polls, which suggest a Sanders sweep of Iowa and New Hampshire is very much in play. The 78-year-old democratic socialist always had the firmest voter base. He has not made any meaningful adjustments to his campaign strategy. What's changed is that he is beginning to show concrete signs of expanding his support in a way that few outside his loyal circles predicted.

The contrast between Sanders and the top tier of the Democratic field, even as it has moved left over the past few years, played out in miniature in the aftermath of the recent US strike in Iraq. When most candidates initially responded by couching their condemnations of the attack with reminders of Soleimani's own bloody rap sheet, Sanders skipped straight to warning against a military escalation and calling for congressional action to arrest any push for war.

It was, simply, exactly what you'd expect from Sanders.

"He's been consistent on every single issue, not just for this last campaign, not just for this last year, but for his entire career," Katz said. "There's no caveats. He's in the position he is because everybody knows what he says is what he believes, because he's been saying it for decades."

2. This shows Bernie is not a Democrat - the headline says it all

However, there are many parties who are keeping their powder dry and will unleash oppo on Bernie if he goes even to a 1% chance at nomination from the current 0%.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

7. 0%? 538 currently has him with 21% chance of getting the nomination. He's in second place,

behind Biden who has a 42% chance. Brokered convention (no candidate gets 50%+ of the delegates) is in third place (13% chance), followed by Warren in 4th place with 11% and Buttigieg in 5th with 10%.

It's early and (almost) anything could happen, but obviously Sanders' chance of success is something greater than zero.

That's a hell of a surge in recent months! How the "Democrats" slept on this earth-shaking movement of a political fortune is beyond me!
The "Democrats" better wake up, get a grip of their puzzlement and fear, and quit dismissing him, shrugging him off and ignoring him, or else we are going to be bombarded with... the horror... articles exactly like this one!.

I am happy to do my part: YAWN!...

10. Bernie is in 1st place in Iowa and NH
Thu Jan 9, 2020, 08:20 PM
Jan 2020

According to RCP's polling aggregate Avg …...If he wins Ia. and NH , he'll be a strong favorite to win NV - a Caucus State … Will President Obama then intervene to try to stop Bernie ?.. I hope not ..It's a free country ..He has every right to do so …..Such a move will create bitterness amongst Bernie's supporters and dampen base turnout for the nominee (probably Joe)….

even if Bernie wins IA and NH, he will be ahead by 2 or 3 delegates. Then it will be wiped out by the more diverse and more centrist states in the midwest and south.

But, more power to you if you think there is some magic by which Bernie will suddenly win. Blinders are a beautiful thing.
