Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney announced his support on Monday for presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney announced his support on Monday for presidential candidate Joe Biden, saying the former vice-president’s experience, progressive record and ability to unite Americans made him the best choice in the Democratic field.

“Joe Biden’s unmatched record, command of domestic and foreign affairs, and progressive vision for America’s future is the leadership we need at this critical moment,” Maloney said in a statement.

Maloney, a Cold Spring Democrat serving his fourth term in the House, made his endorsement one day before Biden and five other Democrats take the stage in the latest presidential debate, and three weeks before Iowans hold caucuses to start the nominating contest. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders led the field with 20 percent in a poll of Iowa voters announced Sunday, which showed Biden at 15 percent.

In his statement, Maloney cast Biden as the candidate best prepared for the “monumental task” of “restoring America as a leader in the world and bringing our country together” after Donald Trump’s presidency.

“We live in dangerous times, and Donald Trump’s actions have made us less safe and more isolated,” he said. “At home, our political process has become so fractured we cannot deliver results for working families across the country.”

Biden, he argued, “will seek to unite us as Americans and drain the poison out of our divided politics.”

Maloney defended Biden’s progressive credentials, citing his work with President Obama to pass the Affordable Care Act, his early support for marriage equality and his helping to pass the Violence Against Women Act.

Maloney previously had backed Beto O’Rourke in the presidential race, promptly endorsing his former House colleague from Texas after O’Rourke launched his bid early last year. O’Rourke ended his campaign on Nov. 1.
