frankly, I was mystified by Harris' poor showing. Even Booker, who had some legitimate problems with some positions, once she dropped should have done a bit better. But the fact is neither did. I don't know what the party is supposed to do about this. The only legit complaint I can see is that there weren't polls between mid Dec and early mid Jan but if the party had commissioned some that would have led to WW3.

and neither Harris nor Booker had one poll with even low double digit support there nor among black voters there. harris dropped out despite making the debate immediately after the point at which she dropped. I think her poor showing in CA was what did her in. She had to make a decision at that point to avoid being on the CA ballot. Booker had his problems by attacking the Obama campaign over Bain capital and for his education policies in Newark which turned off teachers. He also had his issues with pharmacutical policy.

Make voters say they will vote for candidates in polls, force donors to give candidates money, give money to candidates directly? The fact is Harris made every debate stage both before and after she dropped. Again, I am mystified she didn't do better but she didn't. Booker I can see. But they weren't the only candidates who have either dropped or been kept off debate stages despite being important office holders. Three two term governors (Inslee, Bullock, and Hickenlooper) all went no where despite good records and in once case wins in a very red state.

Most people of color are pragmatic as hell, and seem to see Joe as the safest choice both in terms of electability and of getting things done if elected; the fact he worked with some people who are anathema to some strident and uncompromising people on this board is not the issue some would think.

I saw several legit polls where he was way ahead of Sen Harris with women of color! No easy way to overcome any opponent who is strongly supported by the people who would in most cases be your base of support.

The only people to 'blame' for lack of POC candidates are the POC who have been in deep and hard for Joe since he announced; he is basking in the halo of President Obama, and every single time any other candidate attacked the Obama administration it hurt them and helped Joe.

Senator Harris was pretty typical in that a first term Senator with no time served in the House usually just doesn't have a big enough network and enough favors to call, so barring incredible amounts of charisma and/or cash they are at a disadvantage.

It usually takes more than a couple of years to really lay the groundwork for a Presidential run, people with the sheer charisma of Obama only come along once a generation, if that, mere 'mortals' need decades to really prepare the field.

Mon Jan 13, 2020, 02:15 PM

They really didn't come into play until the fall.
Harris in particular could have focused on Nevada early and hard. As the neighboring Senator she could have changed the entire dynamic of the race by focusing on a more diverse state and not be accused of playing the race card. If she had done that while she was rising the media would have followed.

It is really not so much that the first two are the first two but that they are so much more important then the next two and that won't change until the second two Rise in importance and that is true no matter which two go first.

yeah, a bunch of people in Iowa are going to get together on Feb. 3 and get an undue amount of attention. Meanwhile, a certain large state on the west coast is quietly getting ready to start early voting that day - with next to no attention. Ballots - with Castro and Booker on them - are currently being printed, at least in my county. But every talking head and their camera crew are going to head of to Iowa to interview anyone with a pulse. I'm sure there are some nice, thoughtful people in Iowa, but let's face it, insisting that their caucus be the first is the only way they get attention.

The entire primary process needs to be re-examined: this is a wasteful and costly way to choose a candidate.
