Others bounce around mindlessly like a ping pong ball, farting out whatever they think will get people freshly agitated at them at that moment. (cf., Gwyneth Paltrow; anti-vaxxers; flat-earthers)

She was about 60. She lived with her mother. She wasn't on my canvas list but her mother was. After my introduction, the daughter stopped me and turned around to ask her mother, "Mom, which one are we? Democrat or Republican?"

Her mother looked like she may have been ill and didn't answer so she asked me, "which one is Trump?"

I told her he was a Republican.

She said, "OK, that's who we're voting for. Bye."

The mother was listed as a registered Democrat and would be receiving an absentee ballot. The daughter likely filled out her mother's ballot.

Ask Pete about socialism and he does a masterful Texas two-step around the subject.

Ryan Lizza: In 2000, while in high school, you won a national essay contest, and the subject of your essay was the bravery of Bernie Sanders' running for congress as a socialist. Are you a socialist or a capitalist?

Peter Buttigieg: I believe in capitalism as long as there's a strong rule of law around it. We're dealing with a whole [older] generation that was really shaped by a Cold War environment where socialism was treated as the same thing as communism. And the opposite of that was democracy and capitalism. So to be for socialism was to be for communism and against democracy and capitalism. Now you see how these things are really shaking loose from each other in a lot of ways. They've become unbundled. The big question is what you prioritize, and I prioritize democracy. People are trying to make sense of the distance between socialism in Canada, say, and Denmark versus Venezuela. And the answer is democracy.

What did you admire about Sanders back then when you were in high school?

The fact that he said what he was for. It was that moment, coming out of the late nineties, when it felt like there was a lot of opportunistic sensibility by politicians around what they believe, even more than usual. So it was really intriguing to see somebody like him who embraced this label which could have been political suicide.

Bernie maintains he isn't a democrat. Take it up with him.

But joe and pete both support economic, healthcare, and social positions that could only be called socialism. Some camps don't want to recognize that joe and pete are progressive socialists in many of their positions. They won't call themselves that, but that's ok.

People like to point to a hair and say it's a tree trunk. That's how close their economic positions are, and how far they are from trump.

This primary election isn't about economic policies. It's about getting a democrat elected. We can argue policy when we are in a position to implement it.

they talk about how they might vote for the Democrat, show up at the caucus with intent to be disruptive, then vote for the Republican every time anyway in the election citing some small defect in the Democratic candidate and the perfection of the Republican.

It is attention seeking behavior.
