Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumOne of the great things about the Rogan endorsement people miss.
Is that it accomplished two things at once. First, he got an endorsement from a non-ideological independent with a huge audience -- the very definition of expanding the tent and reaching swing voters.
But, second, he did it without compromising on principle and policy. And that's big.
So many politicians equivocate, calculate, and shift positions here and there to try to rack up endorsements and please constituencies. But that's not what happened here. Bernie was the same staunch LGBT ally he's been his whole career, and Rogan endorsed him despite disagreeing on things like trans rights. In fact, the very reason Rogan gave for the endorsement is just that: that Bernie's been so consistent and unwavering on his principles.
Don't get me wrong, I think calculating centrist Dems are doing God's work. Like with the Iraq War, it was obviously a horrible idea from the start, but at the time polls showed it was popular, and there was the risk of getting painted as weak on defense, so some Dems like Joe Biden voted for it. And I totally get it, he did what he had to do, we can't all be pure all the time, sometimes we have to be politically savvy, disastrous war or no disastrous war.
But it's better, and also more challenging, to get support from outside of progressives without actually compromising on principle or policy. And that's what Bernie accomplished here. Regardless of who anyone supports for the nomination, we should all be celebrating this, and let's hope the eventual nominee is also able to get support from outside the base without making compromises.

Sanders didn't actively seek out Rogsn. Biden actively curried favor with segregationists.
Just what insulates on candidate and not the other?

(1,474 posts)Sanders's values. Surely that can't be what you mean. Cutting LGBTQ people loose in order to win independent votes cannot be what you are proposing. Turning our backs on sexual minorities and immigrants and people of color would be compromising our values. How is it not compromising his values?

(20,709 posts)Compromising means actually changing positions or policies, like the way Joe Biden did when polls showed that the Iraq War was popular, or like Warren did when she backed off single payer when the pundits started to complain.
Bernie changed nothing. He's as solid on those issues as he's ever been. He's not promoting Rogan's views on those issues, he's promoting the fact that people don't need to agree on every single issue in order to support a broadly and consistently progressive agenda.
I mean, I guess we could let everyone who doesn't agree on every single thing vote for Trump, but then we end up with Trump, and that's bad.

on civil rights, women's rights and LGBQT+ rights. It shows Sanders has a different view of what those rights are vs what these deliberately marginalized groups correctly demand from our political leaders.
Joe Rogan and his ilk are toxic, and make no mistake - their "solution" for these issues is death, plane and simple. That rhetoric - spouted by the likes of Joe Rogan - kills people. Women, blacks, immigrants, gays, trans people - KILLS THEM.
Seeing Sanders trying to hook up with a true POS like Rogan is disgusting. Either he's extremely desperate, or completely out of touch.

(2,301 posts)Southern Dems/former confederates also endorsed Horace Greeley in 1872 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_Greeley).
You have to be wary that you're not confusing someones tactical voting or shallow support for persuasion.
I think folks from groups that have been on receiving end of offensive rhetoric from Rogan would be understandably concerned that their political needs are going to be de-emphasized in the name of maintaining political support from Rogan's audience that actually like him for that rhetoric.

(32,640 posts)That would put you in a very, very difficult position, wouldn't it, being that Bernie is embracing this man's approval.
That's a very hard needle to thread.
Think about why that is, and why you feel supporting your candidate requires that you look away from this, and avoid discussing it.
Facts are facts, yes?

You have "no interested in being outraged?" Is this new?
What you have no interest in is the embarassment of defending this candidate's doubling down on his pride in this man's approval.
Must be especially uncomfortable for Sanders' female supporters to be put in this position, once one has seen what Rogan is really known for.

(32,640 posts)"Not interested."
You're embarassed, and can't respond with any real defense of Sanders' unwise embrace of him and I can understand why. That video is filled with pure gleeful misogyny. That must be incredibly frustrating for women who have supported Sanders to deal with. Avoiding even acknowledging its existence, or pretending that one thinks it's not really what it is, is likely the easiest way to cope with the implications of this video.
You would think that the campaign learned something after the whole thing with Cenk. However if one thinks that they don't ever make mistakes, learning from them is going to be impossible.
MoveOn has the courage to call him out on it. They have decided that misogyny is misogyny, and it's always bad to be associated with if one is a progressive.
I guess they have decided that Sanders aligning with Rogan's praise, and releasing a statement basking in it is worthy of some "interest."

(4,386 posts)I don't think we get you wrong at all."let's hope the eventual nominee is also able to get support from outside the base without making compromises." No matter how toxic the source. "Bernie's been so consistent and unwavering on his principles." Has he really? I guess the main principle has been what's in it for me. And that doesn't require many compromises.
