One of the things that Sanders is praised for is the unwavering consistency of his stances on the issues. That tends to cause a bit of consternation when something like this arises. Is he consistent or is "people change" a valid argument? I, for the most part, think it's valid. If it's valid for Sanders, is it similarly valid for other candidates?

His supporters seem pretty fond of attacking other candidates based on statements or events of decades ago. Can't really have it both ways.

Personally, I think Sanders just said a bunch of stupid things when he was younger. I don't think they're necessarily relevant now, but I also think that his campaign and supporters' focus on statements made by other candidates decades ago is a bit misguided. And maybe a bit hypocritical.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

What's amusing to me is the pointlessness of it.

I guess if it makes some feel like it's helping their candidate, so be it.

If the media and the campaigns can readily find it, the Republicans already have it.

This is pretty common primary stuff. If people are going to get this worked up about vetting during the primaries, they might want to hide under a rock for the general.

Bernie Sanders praised Alabama segregationist governor George Wallace in 1972 article

"A decades-old article in which Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, praised Alabama’s controversial segregationist governor George Wallace is making the rounds online.

The 1972 article in the Brattleboro Reformer was written when Sanders was a 31-year-old candidate running for governor of Vermont as a member of the Liberty Union party. Sanders finished in third place in the race.

“Politicians put people to sleep,” Sanders said before offering praise for Wallace. “(Wallace) advocates some outrageous approaches to our problems but at least he is sensitive to what people feel they need.”

demagogues like wallace and trump are aware of people's fears, anxieties, and prejudices, and then exploit them for their own gain.

Good leaders, like Bernie, are also aware of what people are feeling. However rather then exploit people's fear and anxieties good leaders will try to address them in a reasonable and compassionate way.
