Sanders leads poll of young Democrats by double digits

BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO - 04/01/19 07:13 AM EDT

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) holds a double-digit lead among young voters in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, according to a poll released Monday.

Thirty-one percent of likely voters between 18 and 29 years old surveyed by Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School said they prefer the Vermont lawmaker in a hypothetical primary.

Former Vice President Joe Biden was the first pick of 20 percent of respondents, while former Rep. Beto O'Rourke received 10 percent of the support. No other candidate received more than 5 percent.

Sanders's support among young voters has consistently placed him near the top of national and early state vote polls.

Black women have saved our (Dem) hineys time and time again, because they're our most reliable voting block.

But I don't recall an entire survey being devoted to finding their favorite candidates.

Instead it's all about the Millennials and the MAGAts.

The percentage turnout of voters in the 18-29 age group lags ten or more points behind the 30-44 age group in every election dating back to 1984.

O'Rourke is polling at half or a third of what the Social Security eligible candidates got.

OK - back to the spin-the-fact about Bernie negatively contest. Pardon the interruption!

....to the poll in the article (unless I missed it), just this synopsis of 18-29 year old voters. What was the overall result of the poll?

Historically the 18-29 year old group has the lowest turnout of all age groups, turnout has been less than 50% for most recent presidential elections. 30-44, 45-64, and 65+ have all been around 60% or more.

Among young women, Sanders’ lead narrows to 5 points (29% Sanders - 24% Biden), with O’Rourke in third with 9 percent,

Sen. Sanders leads former Vice President Biden by 11 points among whites (31%-20%), by 19 points among Hispanics (38%-19%), but is in a statistical tie with young African-American voters, trailing by one point (25% Biden - 24% Sanders). There is no statistical difference in support for O’Rourke.

The race is statistically tied among college students with 25 percent supporting Sanders, 23 percent for Biden, and 25 percent who remain undecided. No other candidate receives more than 8 percent of the share.

I'd found this last one extra interesting. I'd have thought BS would have had a stronger lead on University campuses.

In the meantime, however, other age demographic groups are also part of the decision at the polls. Older demographic groups turn out a higher percentage of actual voters, as well. So, one can't just base election predictions on one group. That never works.

Now, if younger voters suddenly all went to the polling places, it would be a different matter altogether, but historically, they never have turned out as high a percentage as the older groups. So, there is that...
