His campaign on the line, Joe Biden goes missing in New Hampshire

NASHUA, N.H. - Outside the castle-themed Radisson Hotel where Joe Biden has been staying, his campaign bus was parked and ready for events.

But on Thursday, just five days before the crucial primary here, the candidate was nowhere to be found.

Biden spent Thursday gathered with his top advisers at his home in Wilmington, Del., seeking a reset and perhaps a last-ditch effort to save his candidacy, beginning with a debate Friday night. He held no public events.

In one troublesome sign for the financially strapped campaign, it canceled nearly $150,000 in television ads in South Carolina, which votes Feb. 29, and moved the spending to Nevada, whose Feb. 22 contest follows New Hampshire’s. The move seemed to acknowledge that Biden’s campaign cannot sustain a continued run of bad news.

I doubt that, because after Iowa, 538 for the first time said Biden and Sanders had about an equal chance of winning SC.

I think he needs to make sure he doesn't come in fourth in all three pre-SC contests, because if he does, he is more likely to lose SC. So in a way, spending in Nevada is a way to shore up SC.

Biden didn't choke in 2008. Biden was never a viable candidate in 2008. That's like saying Michael Bennett choked in 2020. That race was dominated by Hillary and Obama - with John Edwards getting the rest of the buzz.

1988 is a valid criticism of Biden but he actually bowed out early in that race and then had life-threatening brain aneurysms where he was given 50/50 survival prior to surgery.

I am disappointed with Biden, too, but it's not fair to point to 2008 as a choke job. No candidate not named Hillary or Obama was going to win in 2008.

To compare Biden's 2008 campaign to 2020 is ridiculous.

Biden was never remotely close to being the front-runner in 2008. He routinely received 3% support nationally.

Ultimately, Biden, like Warren, saw their support collapse at the wrong time. I think, for Biden, had the caucus been a month ago, he likely wins Iowa. For Warren, had it been held back in October, she likely is the front-runner right now. But both saw their support dwindle and their front-runner status completely damaged and now both need a strong showing in NH to have any chance at making it beyond Super Tuesday.

Or are you claiming he's going to crush everyone tonight with his extra 8 or so hours of prep?

Bernie barely made the top over a complete unknown. Mayor Pete. Bern has been campaigning for five straight years. Part of that time was in a high profile race. He is a well know face and very vocal. He barely squeaked a win in Iowa of all places.

Sad, this was his last chance.

Iowa was a clusterfck. NH is a tiny, mostly white state. But if Biden doesn't win both big, his campaign is doomed? What ridiculous framing.

This whole primary system reeks.

And then Muskie the front runner dropped out, McGovern got the nomination and we lost in a landslide.

I think of Muskie now, there some parallels with Biden and the way the media feels that its their job to cull the herd.

Nothing changes. LOL

25. I have no problem with Biden shifting ad money to Nevada...
Fri Feb 7, 2020, 12:05 PM
Feb 2020

And I don't see that as necessarily the campaign being financially strapped.

But Biden needs to really go full-throttle on the trail in New Hampshire. There's no coming back from a fourth-place finish in NH, especially if he drops below double-digits. I get the optics. I'm sure Biden's campaign has conceded any hope of winning NH has gone out the window, and that throwing everything in NH, and coming up short, looks bad. But no one is going to give Biden a pass, even if he pulls back from NH, if he finishes fourth. They're not going to excuse that away with a, "well he barely campaigned there..."

He needs to make a play for the strongest possible finish or he's finished.

The attention span is being whittled down to a snapshot: 1 caucus, 1 poll, 1 gaffe and it’s all out gloom and doom.

I still think Biden is the right candidate to appeal to a wider group but I’ll support who ever is the nominee with all my might. I just wish the media would give some breathing room to the process...it’s so disappointing to watch the media set the narrative. We are in such dangerous times with this administration and I fear the media will help in blowing our chance to do this right.
