Biden on Buttigieg: 'This guy's not Barack Obama'

Joe Biden mocks Pete Buttigieg's experience as a small-city mayor in a new digital ad the former vice president's campaign is using on YouTube and Facebook in New Hampshire ahead of Tuesday's primary.

The ad opened a bitter new chapter in the Democratic race, with Biden belittling Buttigieg on the campaign trail Saturday and the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor's supporters responding by calling Biden dismissive of those in small cities and towns.

Biden, who is attempting to turn around his flagging campaign after a fourth-place finish in Iowa, dismissed comparisons between his attacks on Buttigieg and Hillary Clinton's criticism of then-Sen. Barack Obama's limited experience when the two were primary rivals in 2008.

"Oh come on, man," Biden told reporters in Manchester. "This guy's not Barack Obama."

Biden's attacks come as Democratic contenders grapple with a reshaped race after Buttigieg and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders paced the field in Iowa: Buttigieg is surging, seizing control of the race's more moderate lane, and Tuesday's primary could strengthen his standing. A new CNN poll Saturday showed him second to Sanders -- and well ahead of everyone else -- in New Hampshire. Buttigieg's rivals are increasingly desperate to slow his momentum

I'm guessing that is not what he intended.

Seeing this type of ad just makes one realize that they are not playing to the highest common denominator here.

Let the buyer make their choice. Invariably, I found people respected this attitude. More than that, they appreciated that I respected their powers of discernment, and that I retained a decent attitude towards all others, even my competitors.

It's the Golden Rule, Joe, and it's found in differing forms all over the world: Treat others as you yourself would like to be treated.

I think experience is a valid issue, but the framing of the ad is so absurd as to render it ineffective, in my opinion. Biden's involvement in the Iran nuclear deal is to be applauded, but the appropriate counterpoint in Buttigieg's life isn't a pet law...he's a war veteran who has had literal, on-the-ground experience in middle eastern tensions that were omitted. It reads like a non sequitur to me.

Also, as a person who lives in the South Bend area, I was actually put off by the bridge light issue. I get it...lights on the bridge are dumb. Ha ha ha. Truth is, those lights spotlight and illuminate the St. Joseph River. While the lights aren't my taste, I understand the impetus. That river is a focal point for all sorts of communities along its reaches. In South Bend and elsewhere, that river provides recreation and contributes immensely to local tourism. It is a fishery, a driver of economic development, and a treasured natural resource in the region. It has historically been a major trade route and flows directly to Lake Michigan. It provides access to both the Mississippi River basin and Lake Erie after short portages. It has been vital to the people in this area for as long as people have existed here. Lighting it up and appreciating it at night is not nearly as stupid as Biden would have people think.

And the "brick sidewalks" that were installed...most likely pervious pavers to allow infiltration of storm water (which, for many reasons, improves water quality in the aforementioned St. Joseph river.)

primary today, I would vote for:
