Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumShould Joe name a running mate?
I know it's very early times, and I know this is an unusual move, but maybe it would be a good one. Given his statement that he would like his running mate to be a black woman, I can see Stacey Abrams or Kamala Harris as the frontrunners. Both would be very strong, but Abrams might deliver more. Harris is from California, which is likely a lock for the Dem anyway.
Just spitballing here, but it's all worth thinking about.

I like Kamala Harris.
But if Joe is going to improve his chances, what he really needs to do is get one of the people who are currently taking up votes he could be getting OUT of the running.
That means not Abrams or Harris.
It means he needs to pick Warren, Buttigieg, or Klobuchar. (Bloomberg is too old.)
Warren would be the best choice as she's a progressive, gets about 10% or more in many states and many of her supporters would move over to Joe *if* she were Joe's VP. Joe is currently my 5th choice out of the candidates left, but if he named Liz as his VP, I would switch over. If Bernie named Liz VP, I'd switch to him (because I support Liz and don't really care for either of them.)
Pete would be another good choice with decent polling numbers, but that would be two moderates on the ticket.
Amy gets you a female candidate, but again two moderates on the ticket.
But again, I think Biden YES should absolutely make a move now and name a VP (I think he should have done this a week ago) and I think it has to be a strategic move to clear up some space in the voting. Otherwise I don't see how he gets enough delegates to make it to the convention without Sanders far in the lead. And if he goes to the convention with Kamala Harris, and is trailing Bernie, he has no way to bargain. Warren wouldn't drop out in that scenario. She would stay in all the way to the convention hoping to strike a deal with Bernie and be his VP. Bloomberg, I highly doubt is dropping out. Has no reason to.

(10,053 posts)While Abrams & Harris are the names most mentioned - I have wondered why Florida's Val Demings isn't on "the list". She was a rock star House Manager during the Senate impeachment trial.

(10,053 posts)unless the chief of elections (Secretary of State Laurel Lee) along with the governor (Ron DeSantis) steal it from us like Jeb did for Dubya. These two repugs are trumpy with a capital T so I wouldn't put anything past them.

And that the VP will be in a good place to win 2024.
