The delegate votes are mandatory, even if the candidate is out. On the first ballot. But then, they keep screwing with the rules, so who knows? LOL

However, I believe they are bound by law to the candidates that are chosen

Delegates are bound. And when those delegates are elected at their state convention the candidate has the right to approve or disapprove running as a delegate. I know from experience as it happened in 2016 in our district delegate election.

primary today, I would vote for:

The delegates are bound to their winners during the first ballot. I think the way it works is that if nobody gets 50 percent, then they are free to change horses on the second ballot. Also, the unfledged delegates can then vote as well.

The only path bernie has is to get over 50% on the first ballot. He is so divisive he won't be able to swing the delegates his way once they can all vote their conscience.

That (bernie getting more than 50% outright) isn't likely. But who knows. The gop didn't buck trump. Hopefully we are smarter than that.

A lot has changed since SC. A lot will change after tomorrow night. But unless it's a runaway victory, there will be a second round of voting at the convention.

A candidate that releases their delegates can ask their delegates to vote for the candidate they endorse but (from what I can find) they cannot instruct them how to vote. That being said, I would expect most delegates to vote as their candidate suggests.
