Jill Biden's epic tussle: In split-second blocking maneuver, she protects husband from lunging vegan

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/03/04/jill-biden-joe-biden-protesters/

Former vice president Joe Biden watches as his wife Jill Biden, center, blocks a protester from arriving on stage during an primary night rally in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday. (Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg)

By Timothy Bella

March 4, 2020 at 6:25 a.m. EST

It could have been a scene out of the romantic thriller “The Bodyguard,” except the hero of the moment in this case was not a trained agent but Jill Biden.

The sequence began as former vice president Joe Biden was delivering his victory speech in Los Angeles, thanking his supporters for his Super Tuesday comeback.

Suddenly, a protester rushed the stage wielding a “Let Dairy Die” placard. With the vegan protester just a few feet from her husband, Jill Biden clutched her husband’s right hand and interposed her body between him and the woman lunging at him.

About 10 seconds later, another anti-dairy industry protester stormed the stage. Reacting with lightning speed, the former second lady swung around, extended her arms, grabbed her by the wrists and then blocked her with a stiff-arm.

Wincing, she pushed the woman back as her husband and sister-in-law looked on with concern during the sudden confrontation.

</snip>

She was like a ninja last night!
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Wed Mar 4, 2020, 09:33 AM
Mar 2020

you need to till the land, plant the beans, tend to the beans and then harvest them.
During each step there are going to be a number of insects as well as small invertebrates as well as an odd mole and lizard that are killed either by the machinery used or by the humans simply walking in the fields.

As I said in another post, I'm vegetarian. My daughter-in-law is vegan, and she's pretty vocal about it, which is her right. I'd like to gently rationalize with her that whatever she consumes is certainly her business, but advocating for humane practices would go farther than all of the stringent methods that she goes through (to say nothing of considerable expense) to be sure she doesn't consume or use anything that would harm an animal.

But I won't say anything to her, and she doesn't criticize me for bringing my little container of cow's milk to their house for my morning coffee when I spend the night.

Cows are herbivores, and in a perfect world will walk freely in a lush green field in which they will graze. "During each step there are going to be a number of insects as well as small invertebrates as well as an odd mole and lizard that are killed ...................by the cows simply walking in the fields."

Skipping the "middle man" (or "middle cow", as it were) is actually a more efficient, and less harmful way of feeding the human.

I'm just opining, of course. I'm not a vegan. I've been a vegetarian for decades. I have never liked meat, so I guess I'm sort of an herbivore. But I am not going to argue that everyone should be like me. I believe that humans are omnivores, just as cats are carnivores. In my dream world, humans do not disrespect animals by herding them into inhumane conditions for a vicious slaughter. The method is just wrong.

Humans on this planet consume way more animal products than they need to in order to satisfy the carnivorous side of their omnivorism (a word made up by me). It's all about money, of course.

Until vegans MURDER them. Eatin' up all our greenery and scenery.

I get it that plant life is healthy for us. Plus, the treatment of animals we use for food is inhumane, needs reform if we continue to include them in our diets.

But, the reality is that none of us can live without killing some other form of life.

My father grew up on a farm.

Every year I spent part of my summer at the home of my father's brother in the country. 10 acres that included lawn, woods, a meadow that was great for wild berry picking, and a creek.

When I was 9, my uncle had 2 free range geese that he had raised for food. I was there when he decided to slaughter them. He and my aunt cornered them in a breezeway between the house and garage. One slipped past them, headed in my direction. He told me to head it off and send it back toward him.

Instead, I stepped aside to let it pass and then shooed it off into the open. I sympathized with its rush for freedom.

Uncle cursed me, sent me inside. I heard the squawking when he grabbed them for the kill. Then silence. I peeked out the window and saw that one was still twitching, without a head. While my aunt and uncle plucked and cleaned the geese, I stayed in my room, reading.

Next day at dinner, they had "roast chicken." I told them I knew what it was and refused to eat it. Refused gravy on my mashed potatoes, too. My uncle pointed out that I ate chicken and meat at home, so what was my problem?

I said I didn't know those chickens, pigs, and cows personally before eating them. He just shook his head and said, "city kid."

90. What a traumatizing experience
Wed Mar 4, 2020, 10:51 AM
Mar 2020

Logically, of course, it sounds like those free range geese had nice lives up until right before the end.

I grew up on a farm, and had to experience sort of the same thing. I'm sure that's when my dislike for meat started. I am not going to deny my hypocrisy for continuing to use dairy products. I grew up on a dairy farm, and I guess I tell myself that all cows are treated as humanely as ours were treated. I actually didn't put a whole lot of thought into using milk until my son pointed out to me that if a cow doesn't have a calf she won't produce milk, and then what happens to the calf?!

My son was a vegan, but now does consume what he is led to believe are humanely sourced animal products. I just think all products should be humanely sourced, and our best efforts should be put toward pushing for reforms, rather than criticizing people who do consume animal products.

I don't have the answers.

good places to start are the way chickens are raised in "factories" and the way cattle and pigs are slaughtered.

I still eat meat, but not as much as in the past. More veggies and fruits. I do like dairy products and doubt I will ever give them up. I need the calcium and am allergic to calcium veggies like broccoli, which I love but can 't eat..

My uncle and father did not think of the experience as traumatizing for me. My grandparents' farm was dairy, but they also raised chickens and pigs. They were used to animals being slaughtered.

I never understood how farm people could watch their animals being born, feed and care for them, and then kill them. I did not object to eating meat. Just thought I could never kill and eat something I was close to.

Enjoyed their presence in the barn yard, and I think they enjoyed ours. My favorite was JR, a cute little black angus guy. He used to push me into the fence, lick my face with his big ol' tongue and then stand quietly while I scratched him in all his favorite places. And yes, after we had fattened him up with freedom to graze on good green grass, hay, corn, etc. he had one bad moment. We thanked him for his life and the life sustaining food he was giving to our family. I realize this is not for everyone. But we loved and cared for all of our animals. And the meat I buy today? I spend the extra time and money to know the farmer and how he or she raises the animals under their care. Not everyone can do this. I can. And it is my choice. I don't criticize other people's food choices as it is not under my control. Nor do I want it to be.

Wed Mar 4, 2020, 03:42 PM
Mar 2020

told me about my father when he was a kud on the farm. The kids were crossing the pasture when their bull charged at them. My father climbed a tree but his siblings got over the fence and went home. At dinner time, my father still wasn't home. Grandpa found him still in the tree. Had to lure the bull back to the barn to get my father down.

So, soon as a male replacement calf was born, the old bull went to a slaughterhouse. To avoid a repeat, my father made a pet of the bull calf. He and his siblings fed and petted it. Played with it. It grew up tame enough for them to feel comfortable around it. The bull used to follow them, from inside the pasture, along the fence, as they walked to school. Other kids came to the fence to pet it. But the other parents feared that the bull would turn on the kids some day and might break through the fence. So they had to keep it in the barn while kids were going to and from school. Don't know what name they gave it.

135. Actually fruit are biologically active.
Wed Mar 4, 2020, 04:28 PM

Next winter try putting navel oranges in a sealed ziplock bag. Vent the bag every couple days for about a hour then resell it. What you will notice when you eat the oranges from the bag (compared to ones that you did not bag) is the bagged oranges are sweeter and have more of the orange-flavor chemicals in the pulp, and the navels are sweeter and more flavorful. The reason why you have to vent the bag is the metabolic process that is going on with the oranges create steam in the bag, the venting allows that to escape.

Now I am not saying that plants have brains like animals, but they do have awareness, react to their environment and continue to undergo non-decaying biological processes when placed in an optimal environment given their new circumstances.

The research that I read didn't talk about parent plants. But most fruit and vegetables are harvested, not picked off the ground.

I eat a lot of vegetables. Eventhough I read research that says plants are living things in a broader sense that what people see, I have no problem with tearing into fresh sauteed cauliflower, I honestly don't think about the plant the head came from having been "killed" for me to get the head.

Wed Mar 4, 2020, 05:01 PM

My comments were only half serious. I like to look at things from various perspectives.

But I do not think that the changes in picked fruit and veggies are due to ongoing life-preserving processes. They are chemical changes once life is no longer viable for them.

The reason that the oranges are sweeter after being sealed is that they change chemically from complex carbohydrate to simpler sugars. They also lose some nutrients in the process. So do other foods like potatoes.

Flowers do get some nutrition from water to prolong their life after being picked, but are not viable like some plants that grow new roots in water after a sprig us brojen off and put in water. They can regenerate. Cut flowers cannot. So they die slowly in a vase.

In a biology lab, our professor brought in live clams to dissect. When she demonstrated the process first for us, I let out a painful squeal on her first slice. Only half the class was amused (but not the prof). The rest found it hard to proceed after thinking about slicing into live creatures. How aware are clams? Not much, I suppose. But how do they experience or process being sliced alive? Don't know.

It is absolutely unacceptable for presidential candidates not to have world-class security at this point in time. That anti-dairy placard could have been a semi-auto pistol. Jesus H. Christ---have we learned nothing from this country's violent, tragic history?

105. Funny how so many on the far left need to oppose liberals,
Wed Mar 4, 2020, 12:47 PM
Mar 2020

to the point of virtually dismissing the right. Even blaming liberals for everything conservatives do as if we could always stop it and just refuse to.

A political psychologist commenting on the similarities and differences between left and right extremists quipped that the far right hate everyone else, but the far left hate themselves. I always remembered because it explains so much. And is short.

Sanders manipulates that major weakness big time, of course, but review of decades of his political life makes it seem pretty certain he's wired that way himself. Big time. It's not a cynical act to gain power. To him, we (but never him) really are to blame for everything that's wrong.

replaced him, driving over from our day jobs now and then to vote as a +1 to whatever the Democrats were doing. As an independent very little significant committee work assigned, and none that couldn't be refused. No accomplishments would have gone undone. Someone else would have renamed the post offices if needed.

Of course, we'd like to have limo life and enormous respect that automatically come with being a *U.S. senator.* As he's proven, we'd not need to accomplish anything to earn any of it. Just do what we have to to get reelected. And lies to constituents, smears for our competitors, dirty political deals to close Democrats out of the running, mostly paid for by our big donors of course, are proven to manage most of that if that's how we'd choose to roll.

'Biden’s ties to the dairy industry and indifference to the suffering of farmed animals — something he basically never talks about — flies in the face of everything he claims to stand for,” the group said in part. “We’re asking him to stand with animal rights advocates, environmental activists, and ordinary citizens — and against the inherent violence of the dairy industry.”
