Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe Sanders-Obama ad was a huge unforced error.
It only highlights the fact they weren't sympatico.

(11,605 posts)Warren and Bloomberg were hardly best buddies with Obama either. Bloomberg, by his own admission, gave him a backhanded endorsement in 2012 after supporting McCain in 2008, and Warren was arguably more of a thorn in his side than Bernie was. Yet they ran similar ads. They haven't done so well, but I don't think they were hurt by their Obama ads.

(11,605 posts)Remember, Obama was the gate crasher 12 years ago. He had more establishment support than Bernie did, but he was still the outsider candidate who, with the help of liberal netroots activists, tore down the Clinton machine that held much of the power in the party at that time. Many of Bernie's supporters were Obama supporters first. As someone who was part of that it's weird that Obama and his campaign team are now the establishment. Some of Bernie's supporters still have a soft spot for him because they remember when he was the insurgent candidate fighting the existing power structure in the party.
Plus, Obama earned a lot of good will with the left for ending the war in Iraq, even though he was more moderate than expected on other things. My near-socialist grandfather was still pro-Obama when he died in 2013 because of that. Some of Bernie's most radical supporters are anti-Obama, but many others feel that Obama did as much as he could with a Republican Congress but the next president needs to go further in advancing a progressive agenda.

(11,605 posts)For all of his criticism of the party establishment, I don't think he's criticized Obama directly in 2016 or in this campaign. He knows Obama is still very popular even among most of his supporters, and he has generally taken the position that Obama did what he could but didn't go far enough. Also, other than his calls for a primary challenge in 2012, he didn't really seem to have a bad relationship with the Obama White House. If anything, Warren was more of a thorn in their side than he was.
Also, while Obama may be the establishment now, he was the one crashing the gates and upending the existing establishment 12 years ago. Bernie and his supporters haven't forgotten that.
