Democratic Primaries

LOS ANGELES (AP) While Sen. Bernie Sanders mined the motherlode of delegates from California on Super Tuesday, it wasnt nearly enough and isnt getting counted fast enough to counter former Vice President Joe Bidens huge night.
It became an issue of numbers and timing.
After years of being a late season player in presidential primary politics, California joined the Super Tuesday crowd, and its 415 delegates were the biggest haul on the biggest night.
But even though Sanders victory in California was declared quickly, it came after a series of surprising wins for Biden that dominated the earlier coverage of the primaries. And Sanders' precise delegate margin in the state wont be known any time soon. California, with lots of early and mail-in voting, typically takes weeks to finish counting ballots. Experts expect millions are left to count.

(25,471 posts)Calling the race last night was a serious leap of faith considering that we're not much over 50% 24 hours later.
Do they know something we don't?

(25,471 posts)In 2018, it was 68%.
Not sure I'd make a call with exit poll data on 30% of the total, but I guess many media outlets did.

Total delegates 416.

(8,678 posts)Biden could theoretically close the gap once all the votes are tabulated. The late deciders and last minute mail-ins no doubt would have broke for Biden given what we saw in other states. Its going to be very interesting to see how this plays out.
