Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAsking without rancor. What if (some) Sanders delegates disrupt the Convention like last time?
They audibly booed several speakers. In such a setting silent disapproval is the norm.

(11,605 posts)And does more screening to try to prevent it. But I am torn about this, because I like that he gave ordinary people the opportunity to be delegates instead of just high dollar fundraisers and elected officials. On other campaigns I volunteered for, it was frustrating to volunteer so many hours but see big money rewarded with access to the candidates and tickets to the convention while volunteers rarely got similar perks. So I like that Bernie rewarded volunteers with delegate slots, but I'm hoping that he can find a way to do that without choosing people who are likely to be disruptive.

(27,810 posts)I think he allowed people who weren't really Democrats to come in and disrupt our convention, while he smirked on the sidelines.
It wasn't just at the convention. When the pundits were outside afterwards, there was the Bernie crowd, booing and waving signs and generally making a mockery of the whole proceeding, when so many of us wanted to celebrate our woman nominee.
Of course, all they seemed to care about was TPP. They had "NO TPP" taped over their mouths with duct tape, they had chants, and they had signs they'd wave behind the newscasters at night that all said "NO TPP". They did get their wish on that, so you'd think they'd all be happy now, mission accomplished, as it were.

(25,471 posts)It would further help if his win prior to the convention is emphatic.
If the win is a clear majority and there is no doubt Biden is the winner, I think people will be less likely to take the kind of silliness that happened in 2016 seriously. That's not to say that it won't happen. I just think most people will have little or no tolerance for it. It won't get as much attention, there won't be as much drama, and so on.

(24,692 posts)of the delegates by the time of the convention. The hypothetical scenario of having a plurality but not a majority that was discussed here a week ago, seems much less likely now.

(25,471 posts)Especially the hypothetical that had one candidate coming in with 45%+ of the delegates and a 10%+ lead. The math didn't really work even then, but it's impossible now.

(10,500 posts)They were given extraordinary influence over a convention to nominate a candidate who had defeated their candidate. Bernie was treated with the utmost of respect. The party chair was forced to resign over a bunch of nonsense that Vladimir Putin had put out and the silly claim that the DNC was shown conspiring against Bernie.
I remember thinking at the time that if Hillary had behaved this way in 2008 people would have gone ballistic on her. Some people didn't even want her to speak in prime time. He delegates were screamed at in the streets to take off their Hillary t-shirts. She was not supposed to be recognized as a prominent figure in her own right, other than her support for Obama.
And these Bernie delegates were anything but silent. They booed speakers, they condemned Warren as she spoke, and they tried to interrupt Hillary at her acceptance speech. Fortunately the campaign team that he media now tells us was incompetent was on top of it. Whenever too many Sanders people started shouting or chanting, the Clinton delegates started cheering "Hillary." There were actually a couple of times when it was clearly not a necessary point in the speech to be suddenly cheering her name, but they had to do it in order to drown out the disrupters.
