Mehdi Hasan: Biden Wouldn't Survive A One-On-One Debate With Bernie Sanders

MSNBC: Mehdi Hasan talks to Chris Hayes about voter turnout on Super Tuesday and where the Joe Biden versus Bernie Sanders debate stands after the Super Tuesday.

"He's got so much baggage and this idea that he's just got a stammer, he spent much of February falsely claiming that he got arrested in South Africa trying to see Nelson Mandela," Hasan said of Biden.

"You're going to see attack ads like we've never seen before hitting Biden on his record and he may still win but I'd like the Democrats to at least hold him to account for some of that stuff now," Hasan said. "There's one more debate in a couple of weeks for Bernie it's coming a little too late after Michigan. He needs that debate now because I actually think Biden would suffer hugely in a one-on-one debate where he can't hide behind other candidates. He flags in debates when there is 10 people on the stage. I don't think he can survive a two-hour debate with Bernie one-on-one."

Their business is to play commercials to viewers, the more views, the more money they make. MSNBC struggled during the Obama administration. Look at their ratings since Trump was selected. The impeachment was very good to them.

Mehdi Raza Hasan (born July 1979)[2][3][4] is a British political journalist, broadcaster and author.

Hasan is the co-author of a biography of Ed Miliband and was formerly the political editor of the UK version of The Huffington Post.[5] He is the presenter of the Al Jazeera English shows: The Café, Head to Head and UpFront.[6]

In 2015, Hasan moved to Washington, D.C. to work full-time for Al Jazeera on UpFront[7] and hosts the Deconstructed podcast on the investigative journal The Intercept.

(snip)

Controversy

During a sermon delivered in 2009,[46] quoting a verse of the Quran, Hasan said to an audience:

The kuffar, the disbelievers, the atheists who remain deaf and stubborn to the teachings of Islam, the rational message of the Koran; they are described in the Koran as "a people of no intelligence", Allah describes them as not of no morality, not as people of no belief – people of "no intelligence" – because they're incapable of the intellectual effort it requires to shake off those blind prejudices, to shake off those easy assumptions about this world, about the existence of God. In this respect, the Koran describes the atheists as "cattle", as cattle of those who grow the crops and do not stop and wonder about this world.[47]

In response to criticism over the use of the term "cattle" to describe non-believers, Hasan wrote in his New Statesman blog: "The Quranic phrase 'people of no intelligence' simply and narrowly refers to the fact that Muslims regard their views on God as the only intellectually tenable position, just as atheists (like Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris) regard believers as fundamentally irrational and, even, mentally deficient."[48] Hasan returned to this issue in August 2012 following criticism from the columnist Peter Hitchens.[47] Hasan wrote: "the entire 45-minute speech is primarily an attack on Muslim extremists who try and justify violence against non-Muslims on an 'ends justify the means' basis", but noted of his 2009 comments that his "phraseology was ill-judged, ill-advised and, even, inappropriate".[49]

Awards

In January 2014, Hasan was awarded the Services to Media award at the British Muslim Awards.[50] In 2017, he was named European Young Leader by the Brussels-based Friends of Europe think tank.[51]

Super Tuesday was a disappointment to Bernie because a moment was created at the last moment.

Clyburn endorsed Biden on the eve of South Carolina, Biden wins that state, which the corporate media conglomerates took off and ran the narrative with, then suddenly every moderate candidate; Beto, Klobuchar, Buttigieg and Bloomberg dropped out and endorsed Biden all at the last minute.

However as AOC astutely observed in an interview that created a moment, it did not a create a movement.

All the while Biden had been saved by not having to endure a one on one debate.

and if you look at Florida and others states...he is ceding the south which has many delegates...it is very clear that Joe Biden will be the nominee. It was a slap in the face to put non-Democrats who voted for Stein in his campaign to Democrats...it just was. And when his failed campaign is dissected, it will be clear that in many ways Sanders caused his own demise with some very foolish actions...not working on the AA vote, thinking he could divide moderates and win this way (don't think he had a plan for a two person race), putting non-Democrats in his campaign, allowing terrible behavior from some of his supporters without trying to reign them in,stabbing Warren in the back both with the script and with his behavior during the debate where he essentially called her a liar and the Rogan endorsement and his subsequent embrace of it...that was terrible for him and finally railing against Democrats and our party while trying to win votes from us.

The entire campaign is in DISARRAY! The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. It's like a coop of headless chickens all bumping into each other. Totally uncoordinated. The campaign is in a state of PANIC. It's a MELTDOWN. They lack communication and leadership.

Honestly... all I'm trying to point out is that if their campaign is this fucked up in how they're dealing with this current crisis (ie: losing the primaries) can you imagine what a Sanders administration would be like when they tried to handle the unexpected??

The people a candidate chooses to run his (or her) campaign, and how well that campaign is run (whether it's effective and efficient and honest and with integrity) is a strong indicator of how the candidate will govern if elected.

I think it's pretty clear given what we've seen all last week... a Bernie Sanders administration would be a chaotic mess.

Will the broadcasters fact check Biden if he exaggerates like the 150 million killed by gun violence comment to Sanders?
Hmmm we will see .
You know the media always comes out with “opinions “ after the debates too

Remember crazy trump the msm claimed in 16 won debates with Hillary etc.

To Biden’s advantage, if he wins the nomination, trump may not want to debate anyone at all.

Sanders, if he gets in, also can’t demand trump debate him I guess either
and the media of course will ignore how outrageous trump is for not participating in presidential debates but will cover his rallies

Gone now, but I bet Biden is glad he is not debating warren especially after those Bloomberg take downs she did but even before that I felt that way .

Fri Mar 6, 2020, 01:34 AM
Mar 2020

I believe that the next debate is in Arizona on March 15th. It would be better to have a debate sooner then later, but that is the schedule. I think that we deserve a real two hour debate between the two candidates, Bernie and Joe, now that the field has narrowed. I think that there will be a big contrast between them, no matter who you like or do not like. Anyway, voters deserve a chance to hear from both candidates. Previous debates were divided between too many candidates. March 15th should be different, head-to-head between Bernie and Joe.

Fri Mar 6, 2020, 01:42 AM

A lot of people do not follow politics too closely until races get towards the end. On Super Tuesday, exit polls showed that many people did not make up their minds until the last minute. Most people here on DU are political junkies who follow politics closely. There are a lot of people out there in America who do not follow races as closely.

And so far there has not been a real debate between two leading candidates. I think we deserve to hear from them and see them defend their positions. I would not mind more town halls either. Anyway, I think that a debate between Bernie and Joe would be helpful, especially for people who have not made up their minds yet.

Maybe. Either way, we are getting a debate on March 15th. I would like to see more Town Halls also. This race has been a marathon with so many different candidates. I respect your criticism of debates, but I think a debate between two leading candidates is a different animal than one with 12 candidates on the stage.

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I like to see the two leading candidates go up against each other in a debate. Also, I have heard that Trump does not want to have ANY debates in the General Election. That is gutless, in my opinion. Trump is a coward and a liar. The people deserve to hear and see their candidates. But Trump mocks conventional politics.

Trump seems overly paranoid about it personally, so he shouldn’t have a problem bringing it up repeatedly. I also think the message would resonate with many voters who don’t like the idea (real or imaginary) of Uncle Sam spying on them.

Joe needs someone a little closer to him ideologically, that’s Amy. Put Warren on the ticket and Trump would have additional lines of attack that he wouldn’t have with Amy. Klobuchar showed me a lot this primary; I think they’d be a great ticket.

It’s a bit of a bummer for me because I think Warren and Biden would be the much better governing team. Biden cares about helping people just as much as she does and Warren would keep on him and everyone else who mattered constantly to make things happen in a way that Amy wouldn’t and couldn’t IMO.

As for healing, I’m not that worried. There are some lost causes out there who won’t be appeased no matter who Joe chooses. Warren will be a bigger player at the convention than at 2016 and that will help downsize the dead-enders significantly. Her comments last night with Rachel re Biden were revealing; she admires Joe’s decency (especially in my view after the way she was treated by Bernie World this campaign) and said “we both want the same things, we just come at it differently.” She will fight for him.

points...and she will fight for him. She is after all Democrat and not driven by ego like some ! I think Warren could have her pick of cabinet positions...maybe time it so we can elect another Senator before she takes a position... both Joe Kennedy and Ed Markey are facing off and either could win her seat...but she is beloved in Mass...I was thinking that maybe the reason she lost her home state is people want her to stay in her position as Senator and continue to represent Mass. Maybe if we get lucky and take the Senate, she will become the Senate Majority leader...now that would be great.
