Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI would love to see a woman and a person of color on the ticket.
I think that Kamala Harris would be good, but she is from a state that the ticket will win anyway. Obviously, if it's going to be a close election then if you could pick someone from a swing state who could help you win that state that might be a good idea. Lori Lightfoot might be good but the ticket will most likely win Illinois anyway as well. Stacey Abrams might help the ticket win Georgia and would be a big plus if the ticket could win that traditionally red state,

(28,817 posts)Kamala in my opinion would be a divisive choice. Stacey would help in the south.
Katie Porter would be great but has the same CA thing.

I havent supported or trusted any of the candidates that rushed to judgement on Al Franken.
We are down to just BS now and hes on his way out as well.

Amy might be best as VP because we need Liz to stay in the senate! We cant give that seat to a republican.

(34,444 posts)The Repub. governor could appoint a Repub. for that period, and it might give him/her a leg up on the special election too.
A very similar situation exists in Vermont, with a Repub. governor, so potential Sanders voters may want to consider that as ell.

.In Texas,we have- Frm U.S. Rep. Beto O'rouke; frm Sec of HUD Julian Castro. How about Florida?
My father has his bet on Beto...has since onset of campaign either as president or now as VP.

(3,974 posts)Hasnt voted for a Republican since 1972. Has a Democratic Governor and two Democratic Senators. The latest polling from the Minneapolis Star Tribute has Biden beating Trump by 12 points and Sanders by 9 points.
Even if it were and the choice was VP that would help win Minnesotas 10 electoral votes or Floridas 29 votes. Which would you choose?

(34,444 posts)it is also how compatible the would-be VP is with the candidate, in his view, and possibly whether the candidate can appeal to or turn off voters in neighboring states.

(3,974 posts)whoever best helps you win. And that is based on numerous factors including geography, demographics and ideology with the goal of appealing to the most voters. Klobuchar doesnt enhance a Biden ticket based on ideology or geography and only slightly demographically.

(11,949 posts)It is dangerous and a little insulting to assume all people from South Or Central American nations who speak Spanish have the same motivation.
Most Floridians from Spanish speaking countries are from the Caribbean. From my not limited experience working with them they dont feel any special connection to Mexican Americans. Would love to hear a fellow Floridian of Hispanic heritage tell me I dont know what I am talking about. But that has been my impression. Cubans here tend conservative, at least the older ones. And Puerto Ricans, while more reliable democrats and with ample reason to hate trump, see themselves as citizens by birth even if born in PR. The ones I know and talk with do not see themselves as immigrants. Just Americans who moved.

(53,776 posts)all the women were eliminated from the race. Black voters, who again saved the party by decisively boosting Biden's campaign, also should be rewarded for being the constant, loyal base so the obvious choice is a black woman like Harris, Abrams or Demings.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
You pick based upon the best choice. Not skin color.
We need the suburban midwest moderate women. Just like how we won 2018.
Amy appeals to them.

(53,776 posts)With an all white ticket we risk the chance that many POCs will stay home. It's silly to think an all white ticket can work now after black voters saved the party again.

Thats just absurd. Nor is threatening to stay home an effective way of making your point.
Besides, This is a general election. You appeal to moderates in a general. Not the base.
And Biden would be behind by a few hundred delegates if Amy and Pete didnt withdraw and give Biden their support.

(53,776 posts)And we won midwest women in 2018 without Klobuchar. Abrams could bring Georgia, southern votes and women voters in general. Black voters won't be taken for granted forever without getting a seat at the table. No Dem wins without heavy black voter turnout.
And the last successful Dem ticket was a black man and a white man.
2016 wouldn't have been close if Hillary had chosen a POC running mate. Having an all white ticket is a mistake. We're not the all white Republican Party.

(2,706 posts)And nothing has changed. Except Repubs will be more emboldened to cheat.
You also have no proof that a POC running mate would get HRC elected. But there is proof of how we won in 2018. Moderate suburban women.

(2,706 posts)You dont pick someone less experienced due to skin color.
Harris is qualified to be President day one. I dont think she is the best person to be VP, but she can do the job. But she doesnt add moderate voters to the ticket.
Abrams has little national profile. She is not ready to be President day one.

(8,678 posts)A running mate needs to match up and compliment the nominee and provide more broad benefits like being charismatic, intelligent and have strong background that makes people feel comfortable that person could handle being POTUS should something happen to the President. Also, in our case in this election, a woman of color would be great.
I think our best options are Kamala Harris, Susan Rice, Van Demings or Stacey Abrams.
