Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy Pragmatic Voters Are Endorsing Biden
Joe Biden is on a roll, ever since the South Carolina primary. His poll numbers are soaring and his odds of gaining the nomination are better every day. Why? Because supporters of other candidates who have dropped out of the race, are making pragmatic decisions about whom to support.
Anyone who has been following the primaries now recognizes that Bernie Sanders has peaked and has found his support ceiling, which is somewhere in the 30% range. That ceiling was masked previously, due to the large number of candidates in the race. Now that those candidates are out of the running, most of them have endorsed Joe Biden.
If winning in November is the goal, and it should be the only goal, Joe Biden looks to be the best bet we have to do that. Whoever you supported previously, and if you're wondering who to switch to, I recommend the pragmatic move to Biden. As his momentum grows, he will continue to draw farther ahead of Bernie Sanders. The larger his support as the primaries continue, the more enthusiasm there will be as we move past the convention toward November.
Pragmatism gets a bad rap here on DU. However, being pragmatic when it comes to presidential politics is the only strategy that makes sense. The sooner it becomes clear that Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee, the sooner we will be able to start campaigning for the general election.
Of course, such decisions are up to each voter. Still, I recommend a pragmatic view toward November. We desperately need to defeat Donald J. Trump by a huge margin. A message needs to be sent that is absolutely unmistakable.
Biden 2020!

(11,804 posts)Biden seems likely to get the nomination, and he'll certainly be an large improvement over the current person in the White House. It is frustrating that the options for leftists have been, for my life anyway - vote for a moderate democrat or throw away your vote.

(22,336 posts)In 2016 I voted for Bernie in the primary because I thought anyone could beat Trump and we might as well get the most progressive person possible in there. I way underestimated how conservative the electorate is and how far left of average I am. Now, I want someone who can win, and I also want someone who can bring the country together.
