Mon Mar 9, 2020, 10:05 PM

Its one of the ways Trump was able to attract labor voters.

Biden could distance himself from NAFTA without much difficulty. Blame Clinton for passing it and praise Pelosi for redrafting it. That puts himself against a currently unpopular politician and gets reflected glory for a currently popular one.
It also distances him from his own NAFTA vote.

What any democratic candidate does will have zero effect on the trolls right or left. Messaging isn't about converting hostile people. It is about people on the fence, either to keep them on the fence instead of your opponents side or to get them off the fence and on your side.
But more than that it is about the media. The media will always lean into a narrative that is negative for a democratic figure. See Clinton's emails in that regard.
The other point of messaging then is to keep the media from running a negative narrative and instead give them one that diverts.

Your responce was way over the top,

to more Americans than not, so has good support by educated people, and also by more tolerant sorts. Notably, Sanders' populism is nativism-lite and of course is hostile to "the establishment," so he draws various types who share the RW fear and resentment of trade agreements and want to pull up the drawbridges as soon as they pull down the government.

Biden isn't going to pander to that. Another reason Biden won't be joining Sanders and Trump in lying as SOP is that Biden's a naturally honest man who naturally appeals to people who respect truth and insist on honesty. To each pol his own schtick.

what NAFTA is. Most of those that do, don't have a very nuance understanding of it.
https://thehill.com/policy/finance/400132-poll-fewer-than-1-in-3-americans-think-nafta-is-beneficial

Fewer than a third of Americans think the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is good for the country, according to a new study that comes as the Trump administration pushes to renegotiate the free trade deal with Canada and Mexico.
A plurality of Americans, 36 percent, surveyed in a YouGov poll released by the Bertelsmann Foundation said it would be beneficial for the U.S. to leave NAFTA, compared to 30 percent who said it would not be beneficial

between times when no one's speaking about it and times when anti-NAFTA business interests, with some bill about to be introduced, get some group worked up and a demonstration covered by the media. Most are about as solid as butter left out.

Opinions on things like hard-to-understand economic policy that can be used to trigger nativist angers and victimization syndromes come down to a smart and informed thing versus a gut fear and mindless resentment thing, but with most people too uncaring to qualify for either.

As for disagreeing about Biden's basic honesty and truthfulness, no surprise. Again, some find truth imperative, some see it as a tool to be used and set aside when falsehood works better, and some believe truth is a matter of opinion.
