Ohio governor recommends delaying Tuesday's primary until June amid coronavirus pandemic

(CNN)Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced on Monday that he is recommending moving the state's primary election slated to take place on Tuesday to June over fears around the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"It is clear that tomorrow's in person voting does not conform, and cannot conform with these CDC guidelines. We cannot conduct this election tomorrow, the in-person voting for 13 hours tomorrow, and conform to these guidelines," DeWine said.

"We should not be in a situation where the votes of these individuals, who are conflicted, are suppressed. It is therefore my recommendation after talking with the secretary of state, talking with the attorney general, talking with the lieutenant governor, that voting be extended until June 2. That no in-person voting occur today, but rather that in-person voting occur on June 2, but between now and then that absentee ballot voting be permitted."

DeWine, though, says he does not have the power to postpone the primary unilaterally and will now go to court to request the delay.

You have to question his motives in the event that he fails to call it a day, because there’s no path to the nomination and an extended period of attack ads and strife would only help Trump. It would be a beautiful thing for Bernie Sanders, knowing he now cannot win, to suspend his campaign and get working with Joe Biden; I guarantee if he did that now he’d end up having far more of an influence on the general election platform.

In fairness to DeWine, this is consistent with his closure of bars and restaurants. Regardless of affiliation, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, even though June 2nd seems like an incredibly long delay. I believe moving to 100% absentee voting would have been a better, more pragmatic move.

No congregating, get in and get out.

I dread the grocery more but I have to do it (groceries).

My concerns are I have two full time nurses who are quite busy
living in my house. My daughter lives two miles away and she is
a nurse in a retirement home and my wife spends more time at
her home (grandchildren) than she does in our house (well, it seems
that way). That makes three nurses.
We are all very healthy right now. My home has seven registered
voters living here (odd, it's not that big). We can easily vote because
it is about three blocks away and we are registered Democrats.
Oh, wait, my grand daughter already voted, she has to be out of

Ohio governor recommends delaying Tuesday's primary until June amid coronavirus pandemic

'The three other states set to vote on Tuesday -- Arizona, Florida and Illinois -- have said they are moving ahead with their planned elections.

Florida's Secretary of State said Sunday evening that each county's supervisor has been provided with guidance from the CDC and the state department of health to ensure they're keeping voters safe. They've also been provided with information on sanitizing voting machines.

And state officials from Illinois have been encouraging early voting in the face of the coronavirus, with the city of Chicago extending early voting hours through 7 p.m. CT on Monday and Governor J.B. Pritzker encouraging localities to expand early voting hours until Election Day.

The Arizona Secretary of State told counties on Saturday that the spread of the coronavirus qualifies as an "emergency" for emergency voting, meaning a voter with health issues/concerns about coronavirus can "emergency vote" in-person on Monday at various set locations in their county.'

"However, about 12 hours ahead of that scheduled opening, a Franklin County Common Pleas court judge still was considering whether to grant the request — throwing elections workers across Ohio into confusion."

But for the moment, the primary is back on - despite reports that many poll workers already had been told not to come in Tuesday.
