Sanders on anti-Abortion and Racist voters

These are all quotes with a few comments from me. You can draw your own conclusions.

Abortion, October 26, 2018

"If you’re asking me, will I turn my back on somebody in a conservative district who may have a different view than I do on abortion rights, no," Sanders tells Bustle. "I’m not going to turn my back."

"The question is whether the Democratic Party will be in the minority, and we’re going to have to see women’s rights to choose being taken away and all kinds of other needs for women and for the general population destroyed," he adds.

Racists, December 8, 2018

“I think you know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American,” Sanders told The Daily Beast, referencing the close contests involving Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia. “I think next time around by the way it will be a lot easier for them to do that.”

Clarification, December 8, 2018

"There's no question that in Georgia and in Florida racism has reared its ugly head. And you have candidates who ran against Gillum and ran against Stacey Abrams who were racist and were doing everything they could to try to play whites against blacks,"

Both quotes bring to mind Howard Dean's comment about Confederate Flag Voters in 2003

I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks. We can't beat George Bush unless we appeal to a broad cross-section of Democrats.

Should Democrats avoid being (overly) divisive on issues of race and abortion in order to appeal to more ‘conservative voters’?

Identity Politics, Kamala Harris, February 24, 2018

I want to talk about the issue of identity politics, Joy,” Harris said. “This term identity politics, people will use that term — it’s like people used to talk about the race card.”

“They bring this term up when you talk about issues that are about race, about sexual orientation, about religion. They’ll bring it up when we are talking about civil rights issues as a way to marginalize the issue, as a way to frankly try to silence you or shut you up,” Harris said.

We need to call it what it is, which is to try and divert away from a conversation that needs to happen in America,” she continued. “Why? One, because we must speak truth. are all real in this country, so we need to have that conversation and address it.”

I would add, uncompromising opposition to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-Semitism and anti-abortion misogonists wins many more votes than it loses where those votes are needed, BUT if Democrats soft pedal race and abortion, they deserve to lose.

They really need to go to a bar in a lower middle class to middle class white neighborhood and listen to the people around them talking politics.

There will be a few liberals there, but predominately the people that have abortion as an issue or think the wall is a good idea are not leaving the republicans. You can give them the biggest economic self interested reason in the world and they are sticking by Trump.

You can point out to the abortion guy that Trump has probably paid for mistresses abortions himself, won't matter. You can point out that the guy that wants to build the wall that he paid more in taxes this year or that the amount he saved is pennies compared to what was given to the guy making a million dollars a year it won't matter.

The way you win the election in 2020 is the way you won the election in 2018. Give POC, millenials, and women a reason to come vote for you. Stop chasing conservative white guys who used to vote for you because they had a union card.
