He would have five choices.
1. Lie
2. I don't remember
3. Take the fifth
4. Don't take the stand
5. Tell the truth.

Of course he does not want to testify.

He is afraid of a perjury trap.

it is impossible to fall into a perjury trap if you tell the truth.
