(10,901 posts)... I think TIME like to go for the quirk, like the mirror ("you"
and others. So AI is the winner in this TV panel. they also have gone for the negative person... I remember when "Person" was influential, but didn't have to be admirable. Hitler was named.
... I do see Elon campaigning heavily for the title... he sure meets the quirk. I think they will want something quirky - doesn't have to be a person - to get attention and the dollar$ it could bring to TIME.

(10,901 posts)... is a jewel. She's amazing. Dolly is a lesson in how to use celebrity, if it touches you. She's such a positive force... I find her to be a role model. She reminds me of my mom saying, "Stop that talk, right now, you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar."

(8,642 posts)I would nominate the homeless. As we accelerate through the changes the world of tech brings, world events and increasingly staggering amounts of wealth accumulated by people we see the homeless continue to suffer on our streets for lack of food, shelter, health care and a friend. Maybe to die there. That it persists to such a degree in this country year after year while we easily have the resources to care for them is a national disgrace.
I vote for the homeless because at least once in their struggle they should be held up to our faces and know that for some of us what happens to them does matter. I know it won't happen. I know they won't be chosen. It's uncomfortable and being uncomfortable doesn't sell ads, magazines or get clicks.

(249,605 posts)And it was said in the discussion that it doesn't have to be a positive person or issue, but I agree with you that it's unlikely to happen. Coincidentally, Thom Hartmann brought that very thing and the dangers it poses up in his radio show today. And your suggestion of Santos made me laugh, thanks! And he is also a national problem.

(8,642 posts)have already in my area had the problem of a huge corporation coming in and buying up thousands of houses, raising the rents, failing to fix them and then just abandoning them to the delinquent tax rolls. I'm sure lots of people got commissions on the front end, skimmed money from the cash flow along the way and now get a tax write off for the abandonment.

(249,605 posts)In what was once a rural area. And the city where I grew up, about a half hour south of here, has a serious homeless problem, it's been spotlighted in the local paper. There have been numerous plans for shelters proposed, but it's regularly opposed by those who don't want it in their neighborhood. The homeless have taken over a parking garage, but that's not a solution, and the panhandling that's gone on downtown has elicited complaints by local merchants.

(8,642 posts)many areas of New York. Not so much NYC or Long Island but I like it in the Finger Lakes area, and over by the area between Albany and Massachusetts. I have been to Lake Placid, Catskills and Saratoga and liked that too. Jamestown and the whole Southern Tier was nice. Sort of my Rip Van Winkle daydreaming as I drive along and imagine those days. Orange County has one of my favorite little delis.

(7,745 posts)..... to support and defend the Constitution , so he Pence had to Honor that Oath!
Then he would be my choice for Person of the Year if not Decade.
He may have saved our Democracy so that Trump did not get to steal the election.
As a 76-year-old veteran, I hope the story is true.
We may never know for sure, but it may have turned the tide.

(11,665 posts)Given TIME's qualifications for Person of the Year -- the person who affects the news the most -- it has to be him, iMO.
But another - and more positive choice - would be Taylor Swift.
